Hull Fostering If you have any questions about fostering, then please ask us on this page or email us 😊

Hull Fostering is part of Hull City Council and we are responsible for all children in Hull. We are responsible for finding foster carers and Supported Lodgings providers who live in or within 30 miles of Hull to care for our looked after children population. When a child cannot live with their family, Hull City Council take over as their legal guardians and we are responsible for the welfare and future of all children looked after in the city. We need approved foster carers to look after and love our children. At Hull Fostering, we are very much a community, we support one another, meet up many times a week and have fun as adults and with our young people. Like many parents, a lot of our carers continue to work and undertake hobbies whilst fostering. If you have ever thought about fostering a child or young person, please consider fostering with us. We have some of the best training around, we will treat you as a professional and this is recognised through our financial package, you will have 24-hour hour support 365 days a year and you will be part of the best fostering community around. We are one big family and you will meet an army of friends and likeminded people whilst fostering with us. If you have any questions about fostering, please ask us on this page, email us at [email protected] or call us on 01482 612 800. For even more information, please visit www.HullFostering.co.uk

Sarah has been fostering for 17 years and is still making a difference.

When we talk about fostering, we often talk about the difference foster carers make to children's lives. And rightly so. But for Sarah, her contribution reaches far beyond her own home.

Alongside welcoming children into her life, Steph also founded Together we Foster Hull with a group of other foster carers (and equally committed friends and family) This charity works tirelessly to fund raise and support our community events such as Foster Fest, Christmas Parties and our monthly get togethers.

Sarah's journey is a reminder that fostering can be about so much more than the time a child spends in your home. It can inspire friendships, community, new ideas and a desire to make things better for others, too.

And she is far from alone.

Here in Hull, we have foster carers who have been opening their homes and changing children's lives for decades. We are always bowled over by the support our carers offer each other and as a fostering service we are extremely grateful for our fostering community.

We even have two carers who retired last year and are now going through reassessment because, as it turns out, they missed fostering more than they expected!

Some people foster for a few years; others continue for decades. What matters is the difference they make along the way, and the support they receive as they do it.

To all our foster carers, whether you've been with us for months or many years, thank you. Your contribution to children and to our wider community matters more than you may ever realise.

Hull Fostering's Sunday morning fun at Sandy Bottom Farm.

Yesterday we took 65 children and adults to Sandy Bottom Farm for a morning of autumn fun.

There were pumpkins to pick, ugly pumpkins to find, spooky scenes to explore and plenty of giggles along the way. You can't beat good old toilet humour and our kids loved cleaning out the pumpkin poo toilet! What a great idea!

This was a chance for children to catch up with brothers and sisters they might not have seen all week. For carers to stop for a natter and enjoy each other’s company. For children to run, play and have fun in the fresh air.

Some families even brought along children cared for by fellow foster carers, giving those carers a much-needed break. That’s what being part of our Hull fostering community can look like: looking out for one another and sharing the load.

A huge thank you to Sandy Bottom Farm, our newest Fostering Friendly Business, for welcoming us and offering our foster families a generous discount to help keep the cost of family days out down. We’re delighted to have you as part of our growing Fostering Friendly community! Sandy Bottom Farm is an asset to our city and if you've not yet been, go down and have some fun.

Amongst the pumpkins and sunflowers, there were even conversations with people wondering how they could become part of the Hull Fostering family too. You know who you are and we're looking forward to starting you on your own fostering journey!

Today marks the end of Children of Foster Carers' week and we thought we'd round it off by looking at the lasting impact fostering can have.

For Steph, growing up with a mum who fosters meant sharing family life with children who needed somewhere safe to stay, someone to care for them and the chance to make positive memories.

As Steph reflects:

“It always felt so good knowing my whole family was doing everything they could to help children looked after become a part of our family.”

From the everyday realities of family life to the lasting relationships she’s built along the way, Steph has been part of that journey for many years. And although she hasn’t followed her mum down the fostering route herself, she continues to be a huge support to her mum and the children she cares for.

Today, Steph works in a children's home, bringing her own compassion and commitment to supporting children and young people. She also plays a central role in our fostering community through her involvement with Together We Foster.

Looking back on her childhood, Steph says:

“I feel these experiences played a big part in shaping who I am today and are one of the reasons I chose to follow the career path I have.”

Perhaps that’s something we don’t talk about enough when we talk about fostering. Its impact reaches beyond the child coming into the home. It shapes family life, teaches empathy and understanding, and can influence the people we become.

So today, we want to say a huge thank you to Steph. Thank you for all the ways you’ve supported your mum over the years, and for continuing to stand alongside her and our wider fostering community through the time you give to Together we Foster Hull

The children who have been part of your family may have stayed for a short time or a long time, but the care and kindness you helped provide will always be part of their story.

Our lovely Nellie, has again come forward for this year's Children of Foster Carers' week to share her insights into how her family ended up fostering.

For Nellie and her family, that conversation began at Hull Pride in March 2023.

Nellie's mum worked in a primary school and had become concerned about children she saw who didn't always seem safe or settled. She wanted to understand more about how she might be able to help.

Then, one day, Nellie, her mum and her sister visited Hull Pride, where Hull Fostering had a stall.

As Nellie recalls:

“It was busy and colourful, with lots of different stalls. One of them was about fostering. My mum felt nervous but also curious, so she went over to talk to them.”

That conversation planted a seed. A few weeks later, a social worker visited their home, and the family began exploring what fostering might mean for them.

Nellie remembers:

“I remember feeling a bit strange but also exciting, like something big might be about to happen.”

“It felt like our whole family was starting something new.”

We love that Nellie's story began with something so simple: a family visiting a local event, stopping at a stall and having a conversation.

People don't always come to an event knowing they want to foster. Sometimes they are curious, have questions, or have been thinking about it for a while but haven't quite taken that first step.

A friendly conversation can help them explore what's possible.

Nellie's story also reminds us that fostering is a journey for the whole family. Children who foster have their own thoughts, feelings and questions, and their voices deserve to be heard and supported from the very beginning.

As we mark Children of Foster Carers' Week, a huge thank you to Nellie for sharing her story with us.

And if you want to learn more about fostering come along to our next stall at Ferens Art Gallery on the 2nd November where we'll be chatting about fostering and show casing the amazing work of our Young Voices in Care Group.

The conversation about fostering is reaching the national stage. But what about here in Hull?

Have you ever thought about fostering, even briefly?

What made you consider it, or what made you decide it wasn't for you?

We'd really like to understand what people think about fostering, what questions they have and what might help them take that first step towards finding out more.

If you do feel ready to take that next step, check out our website to learn more

Children of foster carers' Week

When a family fosters, it’s something the whole family experiences. And for the children who share their home, it can be quite a journey of their own.

This week, we’ll be sharing the voices of children who foster in Hull. From finding out that their mum or dad wants to foster, to going through the approval process, right through to that nerve-wracking first day when another child comes to share their home and family.

We’ll also hear from people who grew up in fostering families, reflecting on how those experiences helped shape the people they are today.

But before we share their stories, we want to say a massive thank you to all the children in our Hull fostering families.

Thank you for sharing your homes, your parents, your space and your family life with children who need a safe place to belong. We know that fostering brings changes for everyone, and we recognise the part you play in making it work.
