5. Lantern Festival 2026

In view of the inability to secure sufficient volunteers to run the event safely this year, the council will cancel Lantern Festival 2026

Background

28 May 2026

Lantern Festival Members discussed arrangements for the Lantern Festival and noted that the Alexandra Hall in the Town Hall was unlikely to be available as the venue. Cllr Irving agreed to raise the possibility of using the Morleian Room at the next Town Deal meeting. It was RESOLVED that the Lantern Festival be held on Thursday, 29th October 2026, with an approved budget of £2,000.

2 July 2026

To receive an update on preparations for the Lantern Festival and consider any actions needed. The date of the event had previously been agreed as Thursday, 29/10/26

The venue was discussed, and it was agreed to approach the sports centre to see if they have rooms available and what the costs would be

In previous years, Councillors have been responsible for the organisation of the event, and it was said in the meeting that Cllr Irving may have expressed an interest. Cllr Edwards said she would help with the organisation

Events of this nature must comply with legislation, and despite a number of requests made by Cllr Irving, there have not been sufficient volunteers from the Council to run the event safely. The committee is therefore asked to consider cancellation of the event, and to delegate to the clerks the authority to contact the Sports Centre & DJ/Entertainer to inform them of this and that the clerks have delegated authority to pay any cancellation fees incurred

6. To note the date and time of the next meeting as 18th November 2026 at 7 pm
