People in Leeds are now routinely contacting NHS111 as a first port of call for their urgent mental health needs. This follows the introduction of the NHS111 mental health service in May 2024 which routes people through to professional call handlers (some of whom are pictured) employed by Nottingham Community Housing Association.

The NHS111 mental health service is being highlighted ahead of World Mental Health Day on 10 October 2026. The annual campaign aims to remind everyone why good mental health is so important, that conversations about mental health really do make a difference, and to encourage people to talk openly and seek help when they need it.

Chris Wasley, a dad and peer supporter with Action on Postpartum Psychosis (APP), visited the Yorkshire and Humber Mother and Baby Unit at The Mount in Leeds ahead of Leeds United’s match against Newcastle United. ⚽

Chris is visiting Mother and Baby Units across the country alongside football grounds, using the game he loves to help more people understand postpartum psychosis and the support available to families.

His own experience is what started him on this mission. Following the birth of his son, Chris’s wife experienced postpartum psychosis and was admitted to an MBU in Bournemouth.

“I think just knowing this existed would have been a massive help,” he said.

Chris says the specialist support his family received made a significant difference:

“When you got there, people understood. I knew the Mother and Baby Unit was the best place to be.”

He hopes his visits will help more people recognise postpartum psychosis and know that support is available.

And Chris joked that he doesn’t usually bring much luck to the home side. This time, Leeds United came away with a 4-1 win over Newcastle United! 🎉
