Great news! The Opus Prize Foundation announced last night that Father Vitaliy Novak, C.M., founder of , has been named the 2026 Opus Prize Laureate.

The foundation awarded $1 million to his organization to advance the humanitarian work serving people in Ukraine. The announcement was made during the 2026 Opus Prize Awards Ceremony and Celebration at DePaul University in Chicago.

The Opus Prize is an annual faith-based award recognizing individuals and organizations whose work addresses some of the world's most persistent social challenges.

Fr. Novak founded Depaul Ukraine in 2007 to support children experiencing homelessness. The organization expanded its mission dramatically following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, providing humanitarian assistance, emergency relief and support for displaced families.

Fr. Novak was unable to attend the ceremony because he is ministering to soldiers serving in the Ukrainian armed forces. He shared remarks in a recorded video played at the ceremony.

“People ask me, ‘Do you see miracles on the front line?’ Yes, I do. This announcement and this news is another miracle of God for me,” said Fr. Novak. “I am now very happy because I know more people will receive hope and help through acts of charity.”

Anka Skoryk the current CEO of Depaul Ukraine received the award on behalf of Fr. Vitaliy. She thanked the trustees of the Opus Foundation for “a gift that will be life-changing to so many“.

These are the words of a person supported by Depaul Ireland. Ending Homelessness. who took part in their new research, Depaul Voice.

The research explores how it feels to experience homelessness in today’s Ireland, what it’s like to live in homeless services, and what people need to begin to rebuild their lives.

The research found that homelessness is rarely the result of one event. More often, it’s a “domino effect” of compounding circumstances that can leave people with nowhere else to turn.

In , Depaul Hrvatska runs a vital outreach service, providing those sleeping on the streets with hot meals, hygiene items and clothes.

The service enables Depaul Croatia to identify those who are experiencing homelessness, build trust with them, and encourage them to seek further support at their day centre.

Last week, Depaul Croatia staff and volunteers took part in a sleep out. "We didn't come outside to prove that the night is cold, we all know that the night is cold," volunteer Biserka said. "We came as friends, as family... to share a spark of love that will create warmth."

Whilst at university, Nikya experienced and was referred to Depaul USA's Dax Program. Through Dax, she was provided with her own living space for the first time. Now, thanks to this stability, she is on track to graduate.

Across the USA, there are thousands more students at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

In response to this, Depaul USA is expanding the Dax Program. Last week, the first Dax residence in Denver officially opened.

Alongside housing, students supported by the Dax Program can receive career counselling, life skills workshops and financial assistance.

This summer, the UK has so far experienced an unprecedented five heatwaves. Emergency measures like Severe Weather Emergency Protocols can be used to help people sleeping rough in extreme heat, but a recurring risk needs more than a one-off response.

In the US, people experiencing homelessness have been found to be 26x more likely to be hospitalised for heat-related illness than the general population. A risk that UK services will increasingly have to plan for, too.
