They were nominated by Cllr Alison Inglis-Jones, with letters of support from Cllr Ben Curtis, councillors for the ward of Clapham Common and Abbeville where the project is based, as well as Anna Long (Ace of Clubs). We are very very pleased for this volunteers led group.

'Francis has always used his love of books as a means of protecting himself from a Victorian upbringing he has found to be dangerous and, at times, brutal. But books can't protect him when a family accident brings him face to face with reality. The seeds of tragedy were sown long ago, and a violent outcome is inevitable.'

Directed by Alison Skilbeck, Tim Hardy plays Francis Kenworthy in Simon Brett's haunting Victorian thriller, 'A Substitute for Life'.

Like local history? The Lambeth Heritage Festival 2025, organised by Lambeth Archives and the Lambeth Local History Forum, brings together a wonderful and rich variety of over 75 events and activities with one shared aim: to celebrate the diverse histories and heritages of our borough.

Starting with the Lambeth Local History Fair at Clapham Library on Saturday 6th September, the festival covers so many different historical and geographical perspectives. Later in the month there are talks about Brixton pubs, the artists of Vauxhall and Kennington, the building of Lambeth’s four “Waterloo” churches and a history of Lambeth Town Hall, not to mention the talk about the 19th-century ballet legend Katti Lanner at Omnibus Theatre on Monday 15 September. There are online workshops on family history. There are opportunities to explore the hidden corners of our extraordinary borough with a fantastic range of guided walks and tours offered by local societies and by the Lambeth Tour Guides’ Association.
