From Monday 19 October, we will be carrying out repainting work on the footbridge over the A48 at Castleton. This work is expected to take around 6-8 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Work will start on the access walkways, before moving onto the central section over the road.

The footbridge will remain open during the works. Walkways will be narrowed to allow contractors to safely carry out their work.

When contractors are working on the central section of the bridge, lane closures will be put in place on the A48. Full details about these closures will be shared once they are available – this will likely be towards the end of October.

Fines for passing too close as countryside Highway Code rules tighten 💸🐴

The updated Highway Code explicitly states that drivers must slow down to a maximum of 10 mph and leave at least two metres of space when passing horse riders. Motorists caught squeezing past horses at unsafe speeds or aggressively revving their engines can be charged with careless or even dangerous driving. Police forces are increasingly utilizing high-definition helmet-cam footage submitted by equestrians to issue heavy fines and penalty points to impatient drivers.
