The band is incredibly sad to learn that the Pipe Band World has sadly lost another legend.
(Known affectionately as Jersey Joe by his peers and colleagues)
Warrant Officer Class 1, Joseph Rafferty, former 1st Battalion The Black Watch Pipe Major, and the Senior Pipe Major at Edinburgh Castle passed in hospital after a short illness. Our thoughts will be with Agnes, his loving wife, and his children Linda and Steven at this very sad time.
On the 15th of every month, the pipes and drums of the Black Watch would stand on parade at 6am and performing the 'Crimean long reveille'
The story is that during the Crimean War, a young piper spotted the Russian forces approaching the British lines in the early hours. Realising an alarm had to be sounded, the young piper played any tune that came into his head, which woke the picket officer and sentries who had fallen asleep. Ever since, on the 15th of each month and as a punishment for not being alert, the officers of the regiment were to parade and observe the pipes and drums performing the Crimean long reveille.
Here is a snippet of the Crimean long reveille, recently performed by the band at the Aberfeldy muster.

On Sunday, the band proudly led of the Black Watch (RHR) through the streets of Aberfeldy down to the Black Watch memorial. The band and veterans formed up on the banks of the Tay as our forebearers had done for the first time 285 years previously. The band continues to be the custodians of our regimental heritage. We are proud to honour the golden threads to our ancestors who put a feather in their bunnet and kilt upon their knee and enlisted in the Black Watch.

This past weekend was a busy time for the band. On Saturday, a mini band attended the Scottish Coal Carrying Championships in Kelty, Fife. Then, on Sunday, it was a full band practice in preparation for the Regimental muster in Aberfeldy later this month.
Whilst in Kelty, members of the band took time out to visit the mural in memory of one of our own, Private Paul Lowe, a drummer in the 1st Bn, who we lost in Iraq in 2004. Want to get involved? Send a message through the page or email [email protected] for more information.
