ECOMIG (ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia) is a regional peace support operation deployed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in January 2017.

ECOMIG remains active, working in collaboration with The Gambia Defence and Security Forces as well as local and international partners to consolidate peace, promote democratic governance, and support long-term reforms. MANDATE OF ECOMIG

The ECOWAS Standby Force as part of their visit to Gambia has paid an operational visit to ECOMIG Ghana Company 9 (GHANCOY 9) Base Camp at Barra on Saturday 23 May 2026.

The purpose of the visit was to access the operational readiness of troops in the Mission. On arrival, the Chief of Staff ECOWAS Standby Force, Brigadier General Shelkh Sulaiman Massaquoi inspected a Quarter Guard in his honour.

The delegation received ground orientation of the camp and a comprehensive briefing on the operational, administrative and logistics matters.

They also inspected key installations and facilities in the Camp including the Regimental Aid Post (RAP), mechanical transport yard, troops accommodation blocks as well as the weapon state of the Company.

The Leader of the delegation in his interaction with key appointment holders and troops commended them for their professionalism, dedication, and readiness to respond to emerging security situation.

He commended the Combat Team Commander Lt Col Ronne Yaw Agbemafle for his excellent leadership role exhibited. He expressed his delight in the Company’s Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities carried out over the period and encouraged them to continue giving out their best to the community.

The ECOWAS Standby Force visited NIGCOY 1O ECOMIG Base Camp at Yundum in The Gambia on Friday, 22 May 2026.
The five-member delegation’s visit to the Camp was to access the operational readiness of the Contingent and ensure its compliance with ECOWAS mission mandate.

During the visit, the Commanding Officer, ECOMIG NIGCOY 1O Lieutenant Colonel SA Agada, took the team on a guided tour around the Camp and briefed them on the Contingent's operational, administrative and security matters.

In his remarks, the team leader commended the Contingent and urged them to remain professional, vigilant and resilient in upholding the ECOWAS mandate. He noted that all challenges raised would be reflected in their report.

Additionally, the Chief of Staff ECOWAS Standby Force, Brigadier General Shelkh Sulaiman Massaquoi commended the Commanding Officer for the comprehensive briefing and notable achievements despite various challenges. He urged the Contingent to ensure ex*****on of the new mission mandate.

A 5 Member delegation from the ECOWAS Standby Force has paid a working visit to the ECOMIG Force Headquarters in Bakau on Friday 22 May 2026.
The delegation was received by the Force Commander and other staff officers. The aim of the visit was to access the operational readiness of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia. The Delegation on arrival received a comprehensive briefing at the Force Headquarters after which they toured the Camp.

The 9th Senegalese Battalion (SENBATT 9), part of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), was awarded the ECOMIG Medal during a colorful ceremony held on Friday 15 May 2026, at the Kafenda Base.

The medal was awarded to the officers and personnel of the contingent in recognition of their unwavering commitment to their duty: maintaining democracy, peace and stability in The Gambia.

In his opening address, Lieutenant Colonel Daouda Faye, commander of the Senegalese contingent, recalled that the contingent had joined the mission on September 21 and 23, 2025. He emphasized that the contingent worked tirelessly in collaboration with the other ECOMIG contingents, the Gambian Defense Forces and other security forces, to fulfill the ECOWAS mandate in The Gambia. He reaffirmed the contingent's commitment to respecting the ECOWAS mission mandate.

The ECOMIG Force Commander, Colonel Aliou Tine, commended the contingent for its diligent and professional service in the mission area and for being proud and worthy ambassadors of ECOWAS. He praised the contingent's civil-military cooperation initiatives with host communities and urged the troops to remain steadfast in fulfilling their duties.

The guest of honor, Her Excellency Ms. Miatta Lily French, ECOWAS Special Representative and Head of Mission in The Gambia, in her remarks, commended the contingent for its professionalism, operational commitment and excellent civil-military cooperation. She urged the troops to always demonstrate professionalism and remain faithful to the ECOWAS mandate and the pursuit of lasting peace in the world.

The medal presentation ceremony brought together numerous dignitaries, including members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, leaders of the Gambian Security and Defence Forces, other ECOMIG contingent commanders, district governors and village chiefs from FONI.

As part of SENBATT 9's mission, the contingent provided a medical outreach on Monday 11 May 2026 to the residents of Somita. The aim of the outreach was to provide medical care to patients, these included consultations, screening for suspected or confirmed cases of hypertension and diabetes, distribution of free medicine, raising awareness among the population about risk factors and educating them on measures for chronic diseases and also to refer cases requiring follow-up or specialized care.
A total 188 patients both adults and children were screened.

NIGCOY 10 ECOMIG STRENGTHENS CIVIL-MILITARY RELATIONS WITH DONATIONS TO SOS CHILDREN'S VILLAGE IN BAKOTEH

In continuation of its commitment to fostering Civil-Military Cooperation in The Gambia, ECOMIG NIGCOY 10 extended a kind gesture to the SOS Children village in Bakoteh on Tuesday 5 May 2026 by donating educational and household items.

The gesture was aimed at inspiring and supporting the children to pursue academic excellence while reinforcing the bond between the Contingent and the citizens.

Presenting the items, the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel SA Agada, emphasized that education remains a vital legacy and a powerful tool for social engineering, economic advancement and holistic development. He urged the staff to utilize the items to enhance the well-being of the children.

Receiving the items on behalf of the SOS Children village, the Alternative Care Coordinator, Cordelia Pratt, expressed appreciation to the Contingent for the generous support towards the children and assured the Contingent that the items will be channel towards the children's educational development and social wellbeing.

SENSITIZATION LECTURES ON DRUGS ABUSE FOR PERSONNEL OF PROTECTION COMPANY OF SENBATT 9 IN BAKAU
The ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia Force Headquarters in collaboration with The Gambia Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Wednesday 29 April 2026, conducted another sensitization lecture on Drug Abuse for troops of the Protection Company of SENBATT 9 in Bakau.
The lecture themed "Drug Abuse and its Consequences" was delivered by the Head of Scientific Support Unit, Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Commissioner Pa Samba Boyang.
The Deputy Force Commander Col KH Okeniyi thanked the team and presented a plaque on behalf of the Force Commander.
