ECOMIG (ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia) is a regional peace support operation deployed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in January 2017.

ECOMIG remains active, working in collaboration with The Gambia Defence and Security Forces as well as local and international partners to consolidate peace, promote democratic governance, and support long-term reforms. MANDATE OF ECOMIG
1. Provide security for the President of the Gambia.
2. Provide security for the members of the government and institutions.
3. Facilitate the establishment of confidence between the new authorities and the defense and security forces of the Gambia in order to enable the latter to perform their constitutional duties.
4. Keep under surveillance Kanilai, the village of the former President.
5. Support the training and re-orientation of relevant components of the Gambia Armed Forces.

HEAD OF MISSION AND SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ECOWAS COMMISSION HER EXCELLENCY MADAM NAMIZATA SANGARE VISITS ECOMIG FORCE HEADQUARTERS

The Head of Mission (HoM) and Special Representative of The ECOWAS Commission, Her Excellency Madam Namizata Sangare on Tuesday 27 October 2026 paid her maiden visit to the ECOMIG Force Headquarters.

The visit formed part of the HoM’s familiarisation engagements aimed at strengthening coordination and gaining a deeper understanding of the Mission’s operations and activities in support of peace and stability in The Gambia.

Upon arrival at the Force Headquarters, the HoM was received by the Force Commander (FC) Col Aliou Tine and other staff officers of FHQ. The visit also provided an opportunity for interaction with staff officers, as well as an overview of the Mission’s operational responsibilities and achievements.

During the engagement, discussions focused on ECOMIG’s mandate, operational activities and its continued collaboration with the Gambian authorities and security forces. The importance of professionalism, discipline, mutual respect and effective coordination in addressing emerging security challenges was also highlighted.

The Head of Mission commended the ECOMIG Force for its professionalism, dedication and commitment to the ECOWAS mandate. She underlined the importance of cooperation between ECOMIG, the Gambian authorities and the Gambia Armed Forces. She showed appreciation for the efforts of contingents for humanitarian assistance, community development projects, medical assistance, and social responsibilities given to communities in The Gambia, as outlined in the brief. She also showed concern on the challenges facing ECOMIG personnel.

The Force Commander on behalf of the officers and personnel of ECOMIG, congratulated Madam Namizata Sangare on her appointment and welcomed her to the Gambia. He underscored ECOMIG commitment to the mandate entrusted to it, adding that the Mission has always worked closely with the Gambian Security Institutions to maintain a secure and stable environment, while supporting efforts to strengthen national security capacity and promote regional peace and stability.

The visit concluded with an expression of commitment to continued cooperation and collective efforts towards maintaining peace, security and stability in The Gambia.

GHANCOY 10 OBSERVES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
As part of the global Pink October initiative, the Ghanaian Company 10 (GHANCOY 10), serving with the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), conducted a 2-day breast cancer awareness campaign from Wednesday 21 to Thursday 22 October 2026. The campaign, led by the Commanding Officer, Lt Col HJ Bavoke, featured educational lectures for students of Essau Senior Secondary School and breast cancer screening at Essau District Hospital.

The initiative aimed to promote early detection and encourage preventive health practices among the local population. The campaign was launched in Banjul on Monday 19 October 2026, with an awareness route march involving members of the Gambian Defence and Security Forces, health workers and residents. This was followed by sensitisation lectures highlighting the importance of self-examination and early detection.

The awareness lecture at Essau Senior Secondary School focused on educating students about breast cancer, its possible warning signs, risk factors and the importance of early detection. The session also encouraged young people to share accurate health information with their families and communities, thereby extending the campaign’s impact beyond the school environment.

As part of the programme, breast cancer screening was conducted at Essau District Hospital, with over 200 people participating, the majority of whom were women. The exercise aimed to promote the early identification of possible abnormalities and encourage individuals to seek professional medical advice when necessary.

GHANCOY 10 urged community members, particularly women, to prioritise their health, seek reliable medical information and consult qualified health professionals whenever they notice unusual changes in their breasts. The event was climaxed with refreshments for the participants.

DETSEN OBSERVES PINK OCTOBER
The Senegalese Detachment (DETSEN) of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) organized a series of awareness-raising and breast cancer prevention activities in collaboration with the Gambian Defence and Security Forces (GDSF) and local communities. These activities aimed to raise community awareness of risk factors, warning signs, and the importance of early breast cancer screening.

The activities began with a walking event bringing together DETSEN personnel, GDSF members, and local communities, thereby promoting community mobilization in the fight against breast cancer. A sensitization conference was subsequently held at Fatima School, during which participants received information and advice on breast cancer prevention, early detection, and management. The event also helped strengthen youth participation in this public health campaign.

The campaign concluded with a day of free breast cancer consultations and screening, providing local communities with access to medical advice and screening services. Through these various activities, DETSEN reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the health and well-being of local communities, while contributing to the objectives of the Pink October campaign and strengthening relations with local communities and the Gambian security forces.

ECOMIG IN COLLABORATION WITH GDSF LAUNCHES PINK OCTOBER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

In commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, ECOMIG in partnership with the Gambian Defence and Security Forces (GDSF) has launched a week-long awareness campaign from Monday 19 October to Thursday 22 October 2026, at the Gambia School of Nursing and Midwifery in Banjul.

The campaign, aimed at raising crucial awareness about breast cancer and related issues, began with a route march through the principal streets of Greater Banjul. The march was followed by an official launch ceremony at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, with dignitaries and participants from the ECOWAS Permanent Mission, ECOMIG, and GDSF in attendance.

The Force Commander ECOMIG, Col Aliou Tine delivered the welcome remarks, after which the Special Guest of Honour for the occasion, Assistant Inspector General of Police Madam Amie Nyassi gave the keynote address. She emphasized that, breast cancer remains a major health concern affecting millions of people around the world. Once they are identified early and appropriate treatment is provided, the chances of successful treatment are generally much higher. She urged all to stand together in the fight against breast cancer.

During the launch, the Medical Officer from the Nigerian Company (NIGCOY 11) serving with ECOMIG Maj EC Chukwu gave an informative lecture on breast cancer and its associated issues. The session also included demonstrations on self-breast examination, conducted by volunteers from NIGCOY 11, GHANCOY 10, SENBATT 10, Gambia Armed Forces, Gambia Police Force and the Gambia Fire Department respectively.

The campaign will continue throughout the week, featuring sensitization programs, awareness campaigns, and screenings for GDSF personnel and communities in Yundum, Barra and Kanfenda.

SENIOR COURSE 48 OF THE ARMED FORCES COMMAND AND STAFF COLLEGE NIGERIA AFRICA STUDY TOUR VISITS FORCE HEADQUARTERS.

A 5 member delegation from the Senior Course 48 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Nigeria Africa Study Tour led by the Director Department of Air Warfare and Team Leader, Air Commodore OO Obasa paid a courtesy call on ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) at the Force Headquarters on Tuesday 13 October 2026.

During the visit, the Force Commander (FC) Col Aliou Tine, on behalf of the staff officers ECOMIG welcomed the team and briefed them on the security situation in The Gambia as well as the role of ECOMIG in supporting the country’s security institutions and maintaining a secured environment.

The leader of the delegation expressed his appreciation to the FC and the staff officers for the warm reception and the colourful quarter guard mounted in his honour. He commended the leadership of the FC and applauded staff officers for their sacrifices in ensuring a peaceful environment in the Gambia. The visit ended with the signing of the visitor's book and presentation of gifts

ECOMIG GHANCOY 10 DONATES BOOKS, STATIONERY AND FOOD ITEMS TO BERENDING LOWER BASIC SCHOOL

As part of its ongoing Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities, the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), Ghanaian Company 10 (GHANCOY 10), donated stationery, books and food items to Berending Lower Basic School.

The donation was intended to support teaching and learning and contribute to the welfare of pupils within the community. The donation, made on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, was aimed at supporting communities within GHANCOY’s Area of Responsibility. It also sought to strengthen the relationship between the military and the civilian population.

Speaking during the donation, the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Harrison Joe Bavoke, noted that education remains fundamental to community development. He added that although the items donated may appear modest, they were intended to improve learning and encourage pupils to develop a strong interest in reading and writing. He emphasised that education remains one of the most valuable tools one can acquire in life.

The Head Teacher, Madam Korka Cham, received the items on behalf of the school and expressed appreciation to ECOMIG and GHANCOY 10. She acknowledged the contingent’s support for the educational needs and wellbeing of the pupils. She described the donation as timely and emphasised its usefulness to the children, especially as school had resumed. She commended ECOMIG and GHANCOY 10 for their continued commitment. She also requested that similar initiatives be extended to other schools within the community

NIGERIAN CONTINGENT 11 PARTICIPATES IN SANITATION EXERCISE AT KANIFING GENERAL HOSPITAL

NIGCOY11 in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency participated in a sanitation exercise at the Kanifing General Hospital on Saturday, 26 September 2026.

Speaking during the exercise, the Contingent Commander, NIGCOY 11, Lieutenant Colonel Yahaya Mohammed Abdullahi, stated that the exercise was part of the contingent’s Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiatives aimed at strengthening relations with host communities and institutions. He noted that such engagements provide opportunities for personnel to contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing of the local community while fostering mutual understanding, cooperation and unity.

In his remarks, the Hospital Administrator, Mr Baboucarr Saine, who represented the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Basiru Drammeh, welcomed the personnel to the hospital and described the exercise as a demonstration of national and community service. He commended the NIGCOY11 for its gesture and noted that the exercise reflected its commitment to supporting the wellbeing of the Gambian community and contributing to the improvement of local institutions.

He appreciated the Contingent Commander for personally participating in the exercise, describing his presence as a demonstration of leadership by example and commitment to strengthening relations between the Nigerian Contingent, the hospital and the Gambian people.

NIGERIAN CONTINGENT COMMANDER SUPPORTS WIDOWS AND CHILDREN OF FALLEN GAF HEROES

The Commander, Nigerian Contingent 11 (NIGCOY 11) of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), Lieutenant Colonel Yahaya Mohammed Abdullahi, has presented learning materials, food items and other essential supplies to more than 20 widows, children and family members of fallen personnel of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF). The initiative is aimed at supporting the welfare, education and well-being of families whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice in service to The Gambia.

Speaking during the presentation, Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families and commended the initiative as a practical demonstration of the values of comradeship, compassion, solidarity and service that underpin military cooperation within the ECOWAS community. He noted that supporting the families of fallen personnel is a shared responsibility within the military profession and that such gestures help preserve the dignity, hopes and aspirations of those left behind.

In a vote of thanks, Mrs Shona Yabo, a widow of one of the fallen soldiers, expressed appreciation to the organisers, ECOWAS and the Contingent Commander for providing the relief materials to the beneficiaries of the outreach. She prayed that God would continue to support, strengthen and bless all those who contributed to the provision of the items received.

The items presented included bags of rice, vegetable oil, school bags, sets of boxes, writing materials, exercise books and other educational and household supplies.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE ECOWAS COMMISSION HIS EXCELLENCY GENERAL BIRAME DIOP VISITS ECOMIG FORCE HEADQUARTERS

The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, General Birame Diop, has paid a familiarization visit to the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) Force Headquarters on Tuesday 15 September 2026.

The visit provided an opportunity for General Diop to acquaint himself with the operational activities, achievements and challenges of ECOMIG, while highlighting the importance of the Mission’s continued contribution to peace, security and stability in The Gambia.
During the visit, General Diop was briefed on the Mission’s mandate, operational posture and ongoing activities. Discussions also focused on the security situation in The Gambia and the role of ECOMIG in supporting the country’s security institutions and maintaining a secure environment.

General Diop, in his remarks, commended the ECOMIG Force for its professionalism, dedication and commitment to the ECOWAS mandate. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between ECOMIG, the Gambian authorities and the Gambia Armed Forces.

He further urged staff officers to prioritize tolerance, patience, brotherhood and sisterhood in their daily interactions, particularly with the people of The Gambia, stressing that mutual respect and understanding are essential to maintaining harmonious relations between the mission and the Gambian population.
