The continuation of the 3rd Cycle of the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) by the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in Western Health Region Two (WHR2) and Lower River Region (LRR) starts from the 6th to 10th November 2026 in the following districts;

• WHR2: Foni Jarrol, Foni Kansala, Kombo Central, Kombo East and Kombo South
• LRR: Jarra Central, Jarra East, Jarra West and Kiang Central

We want to remind all Parents & Caregivers to:

• Kindly present the beneficiary cards issued during the 1st and 2nd cycle to the campaign teams for continuation of treatment
• Children who were not eligible during the last cycle but have now reached 3 months of age will be registered and treated
• Ensure your children receive the treatment and continue to administer the remaining two doses provided
• Properly keep the beneficiary cards, which will be used for treatment until December 2026 and retained for two subsequent years
• Please remember that SMC complements Insecticide Treated Nets and other interventions; We MUST consistently and correctly sleep under ITNs every night all year around

The National Malaria Control Program of The Gambia represented by the Deputy Program Manager is attending two key sub-regional meetings in Accra, Ghana, from the 27th —29th October 2026 on:

• West African Network for Surveillance and Mitigation of Antimalarial Drug and Insecticide Resistance (𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗦𝗔𝗥) Governance and Operationalization from the 27th - 28th October 2026 and,
• Sahel Malaria Elimination Initiative (𝗦𝗮𝗠𝗘 ) on the 29th of October 2026

𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐆𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓:
• Malaria remains a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and economic burden across West African countries, including Mauritania;
• Antimalarial drug and insecticide resistance is an emerging and increasing threat that requires immediate, coordinated regional action;
• West African countries share ecological zones, migratory patterns, trade routes, and border communities that facilitate the rapid spread of drug-resistant malaria parasites and vectors;
• Individual countries face significant challenges in detecting, monitoring, and responding to drug and insecticide resistance that can be better addressed through collaborative regional efforts;
• Successful regional networks in other parts of the world, including the East African Network for Monitoring Antimalarial Treatment (EANMAT), have demonstrated the effectiveness of coordinated surveillance and response systems;
• There is an urgent need for harmonised surveillance methodologies, data sharing mechanisms, and coordinated response strategies across the sub region;

The WANSAR workshop will mark a key milestone in establishing a country-led regional mechanism for strengthened surveillance, coordination and response to antimalarial drug and insecticide resistance. Member States will have the opportunity to shape the Network's governance arrangements and agree on priorities and the roadmap for its operationalization.

The SaME Workshop will provide an opportunity for the eight participating countries to take stock of progress and agree on priority actions to accelerate malaria elimination, particularly through cross-border collaboration, sustainable financing, innovation and stronger accountability for progress towards 2030. SaME was established precisely to leverage collective action and regional cooperation to accelerate elimination in the Sahel. The eight SaME countries will participate in the 29 October workshop.

In ensuring high-quality Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) implementation, the NMCP Program Manager and PATH Country Manager are currently in the field in CRR & URR, conducting monitoring and supervision. The visit gives them an opportunity to interact with volunteers (data collectors and drug administrators) and community members and gather firsthand information on field experiences. Through direct engagement, they reminded the teams of proper drug administration and reinforced key messages on SMC.
Their leadership and commitment continue to inspire the teams.
