Back when I was part of the E-4 mafia, I had no problem speaking my mind. What I definitely could have used more of as a young twenty-something Airman was a little more polish and refinement in how I delivered my message.
Believe me, as a Chief, leadership wants to hear what you have to say. You’re the boots on the ground in ways we no longer are, and today’s Airmen are incredibly smart and have more visibility into what’s happening than ever before. Your perspective is valuable. Just remember that what you say matters, but how you deliver it matters just as much.
When bringing a problem to leadership, come prepared with solutions. Bring two to four courses of action, expect questions, and be prepared to explain your thought process. Don’t take it personally if they aren’t on board with your ideas. Remain professional and remember that rejection is often just redirection.
But if they do go with one of your solutions, don’t be surprised if they put you in charge of implementing it. That’s often where the real opportunity begins. Identifying a problem demonstrates awareness; being entrusted to solve it is an opportunity to demonstrate initiative, ownership, and leadership 🤙🏼
