Firework Safety Starts With You

If you're celebrating Bonfire Night with some fireworks, here’s a few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe.

✅ Buy fireworks from reputable sellers and look for CE or UKCA safety marks
✅ Never give fireworks to anyone under 18
✅ Follow the Firework Code and never relight a firework that fails to go off
✅ Keep alcohol away from the person in charge of fireworks
✅ Light sparklers one at a time, wear gloves, and never give sparklers to children under five
✅ Keep pets indoors and let neighbours know if you're planning a display
✅ Soak used fireworks in water for at least 24 hours before disposal

Let's enjoy the celebrations safely and responsibly.

UPDATE: The road is now open again.

Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident involving an overturned lorry-mounted crane at West Park.

As a result, St Aubin's Road is closed from West Park to the roundabout, and there is also a road closure at George V Apartments. Diversions are in place.

Please avoid the area and follow diversion routes while crews continue to work at the scene.

Over the next two days our latest group of student drivers will be putting their emergency response driving skills to the test as part of an advanced driving course. Please do not be alarmed if you see an increase in Jersey Fire and Rescue activity on the island's roads, as this will likely be the students completing their 'blue light' drives under instructor supervision.

The States of Jersey Fire & Rescue Service (SJFRS) is reminding Islanders and visitors to take appropriate precautions when swimming at sea, after assisting a swimmer off Jersey's south coast earlier today.

SJFRS Station Commander Mark Bailey-Walker said: "Sea swimming is a great way to enjoy Jersey's coastline, but conditions can change quickly. If you're planning a longer swim, we’d recommend letting Jersey Coastguard know your plans beforehand.

"We also recommend wearing appropriate swimwear and using a tow float or other suitable flotation device to improve your visibility and buoyancy in the water."

Anyone planning to swim at sea is encouraged to familiarise themselves with conditions, be aware of tides and currents, and avoid swimming alone wherever possible.

Further advice on staying safe in the sea is available on the Government of Jersey website: https://bit.ly/4hAd242
