The Southern Regional Health Authority marked the reopening of its Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, with Prime Minister, Dr. The Most Hon. Andrew Holness, following extensive repairs and upgrades after Hurricane Melissa.

The hospital’s capacity has increased from 150 to 180 beds, with nursery capacity expanded from five to 20 beds. Upgrades also include two new operating theatres, completed staff quarters and a concrete slab roof designed to strengthen the facility’s resilience. Work on the administrative building is being finalised.

The occasion also included a J$21.5 million contribution from Automated Payments Limited towards purchasing an autoclave, with the funds managed through United Way of Jamaica. This essential equipment will support the sterilisation of medical instruments for safe patient care.

We thank our healthcare teams, contractors and partners for their contributions to restoring and strengthening services for the people of St. Elizabeth and surrounding communities. đź’™

The Southern Regional Health Authority joined the national observance of Mental Health Awareness Week, held from October 3–9, 2026, with a series of engaging activities across the region to promote mental wellness and encourage open conversations about mental health.

The week was filled with opportunities to connect, learn, share and prioritise wellness. Participants enjoyed interactive activities, giveaways, prizes, a relaxation lounge featuring massages facilitated by HEART/NSTA Trust, and energising sessions led by the Health Promotion team.

Pay attention to signs of mental distress, including changes in sleep, appetite, mood, thoughts or behaviour. Remember to practise healthy coping strategies, such as exercising, eating well, connecting with loved ones and seeking professional support when needed.

If you need support, reach out to your nearest health centre, general hospital or call 888-New-Life (888-639-5433) to connect with a mental health team.

Together, let us continue creating a culture where mental wellness matters and everyone feels supported.

Connect. Learn. Share. Relax. Be kind to your mind!
