NAIROBI, 22 September 2026 – Philippine Ambassador to Kenya Marie Charlotte G. Tang held separate engagements with Kenya’s Special Envoy for the Blue Economy, Ambassador Nancy Karigithu, and Prof. Musili Wambua of the Maritime Centre, University of Nairobi Faculty of Law, to explore areas of cooperation in maritime affairs and the blue economy.

During the meeting with Ambassador Karigithu, discussions focused on maritime training, seafarer welfare, and cooperation between Philippine and Kenyan maritime institutions. Philippine Embassy Celebrates National Language, Philippine Heroes, and Heritage

NAIROBI, 1 September 2026 – The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi hosted “Wika at Bayani: Pagkilala, Paggunita, at Pamana,” a storytelling and talent showcase on 29 August 2026 at the Embassy, bringing together Filipino families and children in Kenya to celebrate Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa, Buwan ng Kasaysayan, and National Heroes Day.

In her welcome remarks, Ambassador Marie Charlotte G. Tang framed her message on the themes of pagkilala (knowing and appreciating heritage), paggunita (remembering history and heroes), and pamana (passing heritage to the next generation), underscoring the importance of nurturing Filipino identity and keeping a strong connection to the Philippines. She encouraged the community to pass on Filipino culture, languages, and traditions to younger generations, particularly children growing up abroad who may not speak Philippine languages, so they can remain connected to their heritage.

A key highlight of the program was a special bilingual storytelling session featuring Swahili language educator and polyglot Ms. Constance “Connie” O’Mina, a self-taught speaker of Filipino, who shared the Filipino folk tale “Si Pagong at si Matsing” in Filipino, with English narration by the Embassy’s Cultural Officer, Ms. Victoria Lapinoria. The story was followed by an interactive Filipino-English vocabulary matching activity. Ms. O’Mina’s participation underscored the important role of language in promoting cultural understanding and cultivating children’s appreciation of Filipino and other Philippine languages spoken in their families.

The program also featured “Mga Bayani: Kilalanin Natin,” a presentation by Third Secretary and Vice Consul Jopol Alvin Ancheta, a historian by training, who introduced the children and community members to the lives and contributions of Philippine national heroes and emphasized that heroism takes many forms, regardless of gender, background, or ability.

As part of the celebration, two rooms at the Embassy were respectively named “Silid Rizal,” in honor of Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal, and “Silid Mabini,” in honor of Apolinario Mabini, the Philippines’ first Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

The event concluded with a Filipino-themed Talent Showcase, giving young Filipino participants an opportunity to share their talents and build confidence through performance. END

PUBLIC ADVISORY NO. 2026-10

PUBLIC ADVISORY FOR OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKERS (OFWs) TRANSITING THROUGH ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi reminds all Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) transiting through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, Ethiopia to observe Ethiopian immigration regulations and ensure that their travel and employment arrangements are properly documented.

If you are only transiting through Addis Ababa Airport:
** Passengers who remain within the international transit area (airside) of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport generally do not require an Ethiopian visa.
** Ensure that you hold a confirmed onward ticket and the necessary travel documents, including any visa required for your final destination, before departure.
** Ethiopian Airlines may provide hotel accommodation for eligible passengers with connecting flights and transit times/layover of more than 8 hours and up to 24 hours. Airline-provided accommodation or a transit facility should not, however, be understood as a blanket authorization to enter or remain in Ethiopia beyond the period permitted by Ethiopian immigration authorities.

If you enter Ethiopia for purposes other than authorized transit:
** Any passenger who leaves the international transit area and seeks to enter Ethiopia must hold the appropriate Ethiopian visa or other immigration authorization applicable to the purpose and duration of stay.
** Do not leave the airport based solely on verbal assurances from recruiters, employers, or intermediaries that an employment visa or onward travel documentation will be processed after arrival.
** If you intend to enter Ethiopia for any purpose other than transit, including employment, you must obtain the appropriate authorization in advance from the Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Service, before travel.

Observe your authorized period of stay:
** Foreign nationals who remain in Ethiopia beyond their authorized period may be subject to administrative penalties under Ethiopian law. Under Council of Ministers Immigration Amendment Regulation No. 559/2024, Article 40.2 (Administrative Penalty), overstaying may result in a USD 3,000 administrative penalty, in addition to a USD 30 daily fine for each day of unauthorized stay.
