Economic growth means very little if ordinary people cannot afford to live.
At the PDE / EDP - European Democrats congress in Athens, Mark Camilleri Gambin delivered a message that goes to the heart of the challenges facing Malta and Europe.
Our economy may be growing, but young people are struggling to buy a home, workers are struggling to keep up with rising prices, and families are increasingly concerned about the quality of public services.
This raises a fundamental question: who is really benefiting from economic growth?
A successful economy cannot be measured by GDP figures alone. It must also be measured by whether people can afford a home, earn a decent wage, access quality healthcare and education, and build a secure future.
At the same time, Europe must confront the challenges of wealth moving across borders to avoid taxation, social media platforms escaping adequate accountability, and artificial intelligence transforming the workplace. Those who benefit from these changes must also take responsibility for their consequences.
Malta cannot continue treating economic growth as an end in itself. Growth must translate into a better quality of life for the people who make it possible.
A fairer economy is not about stopping progress. It is about ensuring that progress works for everyone.
That is the conversation Malta and Europe need to have.
