LGU Indanan Strengthens Commitment to Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Health and Nutrition

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Indanan, in coordination with the Rural Health Unit (RHU) of Indanan, convened a meeting to discuss the proposed adoption and implementation of Republic Act No. 10028 (Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009) and Republic Act No. 11148 (Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act or the First 1,000 Days Law).

The activity was led by the Chairperson of the Committee on Health, Sir Muksan, and attended by Vice Mayor Hon. Allan Jainal, together with members of the Committee on Health. The discussion was enriched by the technical inputs of PNC Ms. Angkayah, who served as the resource speaker, alongside PNAO Ms. Tan, RHU Municipal Health Officers Dr. Mariwa and Dr. Abubakar, PHN, and RHU staff, particularly the focal persons for Nutrition, Supplementary Feeding Program (SMP), and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH).

Key highlights of the proposed policy measures under RA 10028 included the establishment of lactation stations in LGU offices and RHU facilities, provision of lactation breaks for working breastfeeding mothers, availability of breast milk storage facilities in institutions, and strengthened breastfeeding promotion and advocacy.

For RA 11148, the discussion focused on strengthening pregnancy tracking and monitoring, conducting regular mothers’ classes, promoting facility-based deliveries, and reactivating the _Panday Dialogue_. The LGU also expressed interest in providing incentives to encourage compliance and participation in these maternal and child health and nutrition initiatives.

Other important agenda items included the Zero Open Defecation (ZOD) initiative and the issuance of sanitary certificates to business establishments, particularly water refilling stations and bakeries, to promote sanitation, food safety, and public health.

Overall, the meeting highlighted the strong commitment and eagerness of LGU Indanan to support and implement these policies and programs. This collaborative effort marks another important step toward strengthening maternal and child health, improving nutrition outcomes, and building healthier communities.

Together, let us protect, promote, and support maternal and child health and nutrition

Babies do not breastfeed only because they are hungry. Breastfeeding also gives your baby comfort, warmth, safety, and closeness with you.

Sometimes your baby may want to breastfeed even after feeding recently. This can happen when the baby is tired, unsettled, wants to be comforted, or simply wants to suck.

Breastfeeding is also more than giving milk. It is a way for your baby to connect with you. Your smell, voice, touch, and the act of sucking can help your baby feel calm and secure.

This is why a baby may want the breast even when they are not very hungry.

So, when your baby asks to breastfeed frequently, don’t always assume that your milk is not enough. Look at the baby’s overall feeding, wet diapers, growth, and behaviour.

And remember: you are not only feeding your baby—you are also giving comfort, love, and security.
