Why Zentangle Is the Best Mental Health Technique for Migrant Workers

A heartfelt thanks to ACE Group for organising this meaningful and critical initiative to the Migrant Brothers and for giving Big At Heart the opportunity to be a part of it 4th year in a row.

For migrant workers who have very little resources and time, Zentangle is simple and accessible mental health technique. Zentangle breaks abstract drawings into easy, repetitive strokes, so no artistic skill is needed. A study in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association found a significant drop in anxiety after a single session, and all it takes is paper, a pencil, and a pen. Unlike many techniques that ask people to look inward, which can stir up more trauma and chaos, Zentangle invites us to focus on one stroke at a time, absorbed in the flow of ink and the movement of the hand.

Big At Heart practices Zentangle as an effective technique to engage with the migrant brothers. We also experience that the best conversations happen when they are in "zentangle" state of mind. 🙂

❤️ A Thread of Gratitude, Carried a Little Further

What began with our Rakhi celebration with migrant workers continued beyond the day itself. 💕

Our volunteer lovingly procured and hand-carried 5,000 Rakhis all the way from Mumbai, with the hope of sharing one with every migrant worker at TeeUp PPT Lodge 1A following our charity walk.

While we couldn’t personally tie and distribute every Rakhi that day, we knew the remaining ones still had many wrists—and hearts—to reach. ❤️

More than 4,000 Rakhis were lovingly packed and shared with Terusan Recreation Centre, Kaki Bukit Recreation Centre and Westlite Toh Guan dormitory, allowing the spirit of Raksha Bandhan to travel even further across our migrant worker community.

Sometimes, a small thread carries a much bigger message: you are remembered, you are appreciated, and you are part of our community.

Thank you to everyone who helped these little threads of friendship find their way to many more hands. 🫶

🎂 Baked with love. Delivered with heart.

A birthday cake may seem like a small thing.

But to a child, it can mean someone remembered me. Someone thought of me. Today is my day. ❤️

Behind every cake delivered to the children at IPAC is a volunteer baker who has given something of their own—their time, ingredients, creativity, and care—to make a child’s birthday a little more special.

Some cakes are elaborate. Some are simple. Some are made late at night after work. But every single one carries the same message:

You are worth celebrating. 🎈

And you don’t have to be a baker to be part of this.

We’re looking for more kind hearts to join us—whether you can bake and donate a birthday cake, or simply help collect a cake from one of our volunteer bakers and deliver it to the children’s home.

A few hours of your time can become part of a childhood memory. 💗

🎂 Bake a cake.
🚗 Deliver a cake.
❤️ Help us make sure another child gets celebrated.

💛 Two Days of Creativity, Connection & Joy

This school holiday, Big At Heart volunteers spent two meaningful days creating moments of fun, creativity and connection for the children at Gracehaven Fostering . 🌟

🌕 Day 1 — Snowskin Mooncake Workshop where the children got hands-on making their own snowskin mooncakes. From preparing the fillings to shaping and wrapping their creations, it was a day filled with curious hands, big smiles and plenty of teamwork. 🥮✨

🎨 Day 2 — Paper Garland Making
The creativity continued with a colourful paper garland-making activity. The children explored their imagination, worked together and transformed simple materials into something beautiful to brighten their space. 🌈✂️

But beyond the mooncakes and paper garlands, what made these two days special was the connection created between volunteers and the children.

As the IPAC Coordinator beautifully shared:

“Your enthusiasm, patience, and generosity brought smiles, laughter, and wonderful memories to the children. Beyond the activities themselves, your presence showed them that there are people in the community who care about and believe in them.” 🙏💛

That is what being Big At Heart is about — showing up, sharing what we can, and reminding others that they are seen, valued and cared for.

A heartfelt thank you to all our wonderful volunteers Yen Cometa , Khushboo D , asmita, ketaki, siju, sharvari and arti, who gave their time, energy and hearts to make these school-holiday activities possible. 💛

Small moments. Shared joy. Big hearts.

Sometimes, the smallest gesture touches the biggest part of the heart. ❤️

A rakhi tied with love, a moment of connection, and a reminder that we’re all part of one another’s story.

Thank you prachi shele for joining our Trekkers@Heart walk and Rakhi activity, and for sharing your heartfelt reflections afterwards. Your words captured so beautifully what these moments of connection are truly about. 🤍

This is what Big@Heart is about and what Trekkers@heart walks for. 🤍

Different journeys. One heart.

Walking Together, Wishing Them Well 💛

This Sunday, Trekkers@heart & Big At Heart brought people together for a meaningful morning walk with 9 migrant brothers from TeeUp’s PPT Lodge 1A, followed by breakfast, fellowship and a special Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi tying) ceremony.

Rakhi is more than a simple thread. It carries a wish for protection, strength and well-being — especially meaningful for brothers who are far from their own homes and sisters. As each Rakhi was tied, it was a small reminder that even while they are away from their families, they are remembered, cared for and held in the hearts of a community here in Singapore.

The morning continued over heart-to-heart conversations during the walk, shared homemade breakfast after the walk, the distribution of groceries and fresh fruits to more than 500 migrant brothers, followed by a dormitory tour.

Simple acts, but meaningful ways of saying: you are seen, you are valued, and you are not alone. 🤍

We are grateful to everyone who walked, volunteered, donated and helped make this morning possible.

A report on the fundraiser, including how your contributions were put to work, will follow soon. 🙏

Big At Heart was privileged and happy to organise a MDW Fiesta with and for One Stop Centre of High Commission of India in Singapore on 16th August 2026 in the premises of the embassy. There were information and assistance booths of Centre for Domestic Employees - CDE , Singtel, POSB, .migrants.sg, health check byTrue Care Clinic and more. The evening opened with a welcome address by Mr Ajay Singh - First Secretary (Community Welfare), introduction of OSC by the OSC officers and Ms Cheshta, followed by an address by the High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule. A session of chair yoga by Visha Seth, Bolly zumba by Namrta Birmi , cultural performances by Maharashtra Mandal Singapore, Singapore Sindhi Association and Vanita NupuraDanceAcademy , followed by a game of Bingo created much buzz and excitement. Big At Heart volunteers ran a zentangle as mental health and relaxation activity, while The Kindness Ripple ran a fun game and henna booth. The evening was nicely held together by young MCs from Singapore Tamil Society.

We thank One Stop Centre for giving us an opportunity and support to create this sweet yet essential outreach afternoon for the Domestic Helpers - the lifeline of many households in Singapore.
