🥵Heat-Related Illnesses🥵

Abilene is under a heat advisory until Friday, but we all know this won’t be the last time we see triple digits this summer.

Hydrate, take breaks, find shade, and be mindful of the heat related illnesses you or a loved one could acquire by prolonged heat exposure.

⚠️Do NOT provide ice cold water to drink or dump ice cold water on someone experiencing any of these symptoms. You can shock their system and it can lead to more adverse symptoms, such as loss of consciousness.

Cool someone off gradually with room temperature water and removing them from direct sunlight.

🏆Years of Service Milestone🏆

It is our privilege to announce that one of our Paramedics has reached her 8 Years of Service milestone.

Meet Cabrella!

Cabrella is our Administration Supervisor. The list of what she does for our operation on a daily basis is too long to write, but part of that work is clerical work, payroll, and answering the phone that always seems to be ringing.

In short, Cabrella is one of the superheroes on our Leadership team, and we are super grateful for her hard work, dedication, and the snacks she keeps in her office specifically for hungry personnel roaming the halls.

Thank you for your service to your fellow employees, the Administration and Leadership teams, and to the community of Abilene.

⚡️Lightning Safety⚡️

Did you hear those big ka-booms yesterday evening? 💥

With the weather change and summer trying to officially take over, we’re going to be seeing thunderstorms and the increase potential for severe weather.

We have a few safety guidelines to help you protect yourself from the dangers of lightning, which can strike even without a rainstorm present.

🏠Seek Shelter: Avoid open areas, including outside recreation areas such as lakes and golf courses.

⏱️Wait It Out: Wait at least 30 minutes between thunderclaps before leaving a shelter.

🔌Avoid Conductors: Don’t use corded phone lines (however retro), electrical appliances, and plumbing. If you are caught outside, avoid holding or wearing anything with metal while you head to a shelter (helmets, sports equipment, etc.).

⬇️Stay Low: If a storm catches you unawares outside, stay low to the ground and away from from trees, poles, and other tall objects.

🤕Protect Your Head: If you’re outside and cannot find shelter, crouch down with your head low and hands on your knees.

💡Educate Yourself: For more info on lightning safety, visit Lightning Tips (weather.gov).

🏆Years of Service Milestone🏆

We have the honor of celebrating one of our employees who has been with MetroCare since before we became a GMR operation in 2004.

Meet Paramedic Luis, with a whopping 22 Years of Service!

Luis started his EMS career in 1989. In the same year, the original Game Boy began selling in North America.

He became a Paramedic in 1992. In the same year, the Cartoon Cable Network (Cartoon Network) first premiered on television.

Luis’ official hiring at MetroCare was in the year 2004, which is also the year Google first released Gmail.

Luis was previously a Field Training Officer and Clinical Education Specialist at MetroCare. He also soared in the skies as a Flight Paramedic for 2.5 years.

Currently, he’s employed with the Abilene Fire Department and has served on their Community Response Team for the last four years.

22 years is a significant amount of time that Luis has dedicated to helping our operation and serving his community.

His MetroCare career, on its own, is older than some of our new hires, and is old enough to drive, vote, and enlist in the military, the latter of which Luis dutifully did.

His total career, encompassing 37 years, can rent a car and may be due for a midlife crisis.

Luis, you are an exceptional example of perseverance, dedication, and loyalty. We appreciate your 22 Years of service not only as a part of MetroCare, but in all the ways you serve and help your community.

You’re golden, Luis. Keep shining!

Today marks the end of EMS Week.

This year’s week was bittersweet, with both happy moments and marked by profound grief.

On Thursday, MetroCare had the honor and privilege of joining the funeral procession for late Abilene Firefighter Hunter Patterson. The way the community and agencies came together for his send off was something purely heartwarming. Outside agencies came into Abilene to cover the Fire Department’s response area so they were able to say farewell to their brother. Out of respect for everyone involved in this difficult time, no photos were captured.

Throughout the week, several organizations popped by MetroCare to give our crews goodies. Due to the hectic week, we were unable to gather photos of every donation. What we lack in photographic evidence we make up for in our enthusiasm!

We’d like to say a special thank you to TSTC in West Texas for arriving before the early bird flies to deliver coffee and zucchini bread. A caffeinated EMS crew is a happy EMS crew. ☕️

Hendrick Health had a massive cookout and were diligent in catching every crew member who dropped off patients. 🍔

Express ER Abilene dropped off goodie baskets with the essentials needed to keep our crews in tip top shape - energy drinks, candy, and even stickers! 🥤

KTAB News interviewed two of our personnel for their podcast On Time For Mom Time (go check it out, we’ll share it to our story!). It was a privilege to have our stories heard and shared. 🎥

And last, but not least, our Administration and Leadership team spent hours of their personal time ensuring this EMS Week had smooth sailing. 🛳️

🎉 It’s EMS Week! 🎉

We started our EMS week off with homemade breakfast burritos in the morning, made dutifully by members of our Admin team and additional personnel who volunteered their time. Jimmy John sandwiches were served for a quick lunch on-the-go for our busy personnel.

The weather can’t rain on our parade, because Taco Tuesday is still going to commence today with the delicious Rosas Tortilla Factory’s platters.

Wednesday and Thursday are family-based days with pizza (finally, a pizza party!), movies, popcorn, snacks, and even outdoor fun (we’re trying to run the rain clouds out of town, anyone have tips?). Friday will be a pot luck appreciation luncheon for our administration team.

We’ll post more pictures throughout the week!

Happy EMS week, team! The fun has only started!

Our thoughts are with you and our hearts hurt for the loss their families, his firefighter brotherhood, and their communities are experiencing.

With the heaviest of hearts, we announce the death of Abilene Firefighter - Hunter Patterson. FF Patterson and his friend Brett Underwood, were involved in an off-duty, fatal vehicle accident early this morning, Friday, May 15, 2026. Both men passed away.

This is a devastating loss for Hunter’s family and our department. Hunter was a respected and beloved member of the AFD for 11 years. Hunter leaves behind his wife and children, as well as numerous other family members and friends. The loss of both men has greatly impacted members of our department. We ask that our wonderful community keep both families in their thoughts and prayers, while also respecting their privacy at this difficult time.

Happy National Nurse’s Week! 🏥

May 6th - May 12th is National Nurse’s Week, where organizations around the world take time to shine a light on the incredibly dedicated nurses and the invaluable contributions they make.

To show our local nurses our appreciation, we dropped off bundtlettes to Hendrick South, Plaza, and Hendrick North earlier last week.

We work alongside countless nurses everyday across multiple facilities, and are proud of the teamwork and camaraderie that is fostered across our agencies.

Thank you for the countless hours and multiple sacrifices you make each day to provide medical care to your community.

We hope you enjoyed your week!
