As part of the most transformational election for public education in Texas in decades, two members and one former member were elected to the Texas House Tuesday.

Adrian Reyna, a TSTA member and U.S. history teacher in San Antonio ISD, won the open District 125 House seat in San Antonio. Reyna also is executive vice president of the San Antonio Alliance, TSTA’s local union affiliate in the district.

Michelle Williams, a TSTA member and former president of the Houston Education Association, TSTA’s affiliate in Houston ISD, unseated Republican incumbent Charles Cunningham in House District 127.

Montserrat Garibay, a former bilingual pre-K teacher in Austin ISD and former vice president of Education Austin, TSTA’s local affiliate, was elected to the House District 49 seat, being vacated by Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa.

In 2023, Greg Abbott let a school funding bill die because lawmakers would not give him vouchers.

Teachers waited on raises while he held out for his donors’ priority.

In 2025 he got his way, and the state found one billion dollars for private school vouchers.

More than 200,000 students applied for the first year of the program, and about 102,000 have been accepted. The state’s own Legislative Budget Board projected the program could grow to $4.8 billion by 2030.

That money comes out of the same state budget that funds your classroom, your raise, and your retirement.

Teachers did finally get “raises” last year.

Even so, the average Texas teacher still earns about $8,500 less than the national average, Texas still ranks 29th in the country, and after inflation teachers are earning less than they did in 2017.

A billion dollars for private schools, and you are still 29th.

Greg Abbott is betting you will forget that by Tuesday.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, and polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On a recent episode of TASB Talks, Robstown Independent School District Superintendent Marc Puig discussed how BuyBoard has helped his district do more with less.

“We’re dealing with less resources than we’ve ever had before, so naturally, school districts are having to be as efficient as possible,” Puig said. “BuyBoard is an opportunity for us to be strategic with the way we stretch our taxpayer dollars.”
