Football Playoffs Begin Friday: 9-1 Cavs Host Kirby After Routing South Side 58-0
By Ron Barry

Everybody is now 0-and-0, and (allegedly) anybody can beat anyone else. It’s TSSAA Football Playoff time.
And while the TSSAA has historically had a multitude of opening-round mismatches, it’s that time of year when no coach worth his salt lets his team assume it’s going to win just by showing up at the stadium.
Crockett County head coach Kevin Ward shouldn’t have that problem. His Cavs host Kirby High School Friday at 7 p.m. at Cavalier Stadium, and memories of games the last two seasons with the Memphis-based school should alleviate any overconfidence problems.
“We’ve played them each of the last two years, and both games were close,” Ward said. “They have a lot of talented athletes and a lot of speed. We just have to come expecting a battle. Nobody gets anything handed to them this time of year.”
If Ward’s crew shows up Friday with the same focus it had against South Side in Jackson in the regular-season finale, the Cavs should be all right. Crockett scored 37 points in the first quarter on the way to steamrolling the Hawks 58-0, a score kept that close only because the second half was reduced to eight-minute quarters and a running clock.
“We did exactly what we needed to do against a struggling team,” Ward said. “We scored quickly, our defense put them in a hole and scored again, and we executed well enough to take away any positive thoughts they might have had. There wasn’t much we didn’t do right tonight, and I’m proud of our seniors for securing another home game. I hope every Crockett fan will be there Friday night cheering these young men on. 9-and-1 seasons don’t happen very often.”
The win over South Side couldn’t have been more lopsided. Crockett gained 350 yards on just 31 plays from scrimmage and limited the Hawks to – and this is not a typo – minus 30 yards on their 29 snaps. In the first quarter alone, the hosts ran five plays that lost 10 or more yards apiece, plus a fumble that Cav linebacker Brody Jones returned 10 yards for a touchdown.
Sandwiching the Jones tally were a pair of Ben Burgess scoring passes, the first covering 46 yards to Sq**rt Pickens and the second going for 63 yards to Titus Luten. DK Woods ran for a couple of two-point conversions to make it 23-0 before four full minutes had ticked off the clock.
Woods – who only carried the ball five times during the contest, for 60 yards - scored from eight yards out shortly after that, Khalan Thomas zipped around left end for a five-yard touchdown that made it 37-0 before some fans had even settled into their seats.
Mason Dennis added a six-yard tally early in the second quarter and Chris Vance took another one in from 13 yards out as the Cavs carried a 51-0 advantage into the dressing room at halftime.
The shortened periods and running clock ended the duel mercifully quickly for South Side, although Crockett managed to score one more time in the fourth on another five-yard scamper by Vance. Noah Mayfield booted five extra points and Landeyn Catalan one to supplement the pair of two-point conversions by Woods.
In the other Region 7-4A finales, top seed Lexington hammered Dyer County 70-36; Jackson North Side defeated Chester County 42-13; and South Gibson edged Hardin County 13-7. Kirby dropped a 42-21 decision to Haywood in its last regular-season game.

CCMS Basketballers Sweep Haywood; Bond, Frye Provide Clutch 4th Quarters
By Ron Barry

Jordin Bond netted a three-pointer and five out of six free throws in the fourth quarter as Crockett County Middle School’s girls basketball team knocked off Haywood 38-35 Thursday night, initiating a hometown sweep as the boys followed with a 50-41 victory when Jaylen Frye poured in nine of his game-high 18 points in the final period.
Coach Jamar Turner’s Lady Cavaliers – now 6-1 on the season – grabbed a four-point lead after the first quarter and then held on for dear life as the teams battled to a near standstill after that. But Bond’s free throw shooting down the stretch preserved the advantage for the hosts, who received 17 points apiece from Bond and Trinity Pankey.
Frye tallied 15 of his 18 points in the second half for Coach Tyler Gadlen’s Crockett boys, including seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter. Jordan Young and Nolen McDonald added huge three-pointers in the period as the Cavs drilled six for the game, a season high. Young finished with 14 points and Reese Jones eight for the winners, who are now 5-2.
Both CCMS teams play next at Milan on Monday night.

Lady Cav XC Team Headed Back to State; Two Freshmen Boys Also Gain Berths
By Ron Barry

The girls didn’t quite beat Obion County Central, and the boys just missed qualifying as a squad. But Crockett County’s cross-country teams performed quite nicely at Tuesday’s Section 5 Region Championships, with the Lady Cavaliers gaining a return trip to the TSSAA State Championships as a team and two members of the boys unit – both freshmen – earning individual spots in the competition.
Coach Julie Nass watched an amazing six of her girls place in the Top 20 to win Regional medals. But perennial powerhouse Obion County placed its first four runners in the Top 10 and its next two closely enough to the Top 20 to edge past Crockett 44-51 for the team championship in the 5K race held at the Martin Recreation Complex.
In the boys run that followed, the Cavaliers finished just six points away from the fourth place they needed to earn a team berth in the State, but freshmen Jose Aguirre and Nathan Bailey qualified as individuals by being among the first five runners not already on a qualifying team.
“You can see how close we were,” said Nass, who was hoping to qualify both teams in the same year for the first time in school history. “Seven points behind Obion in the girls for the championship, and just six points away for the boys as a team. On the girls side, Obion bested us again and credit to them. They knew we were coming for them and they gave it their all. But I’m still proud of having six medalists and such a great score.”
“At least we scared Obion this time,” assistant coach Walker Williams joked. “It’s been a while since anybody did that.”
Junior Alivia Hale had one of the best placements in Crockett history, snatching third with a run of 22:39.41. Only Westview’s phenomenal Alaina Uselton (19:43.47) and Obion’s Klicey Campbell (22:01.70) beat Hale to the finish line.
But only a couple of minutes later came Crockett’s maroon wave. Freshman Olivia Barger – fighting through a painful side stitch that hampered her most of the way – was 11th (24:15.80). Sophomore Ruth Gourley was 13th (24:57.33). Senior Anahy De La Rosa – who has shaved multiple minutes off her times as the season has progressed – was 15th (25:21.08). Senior Avery Thornton was 16th (25:26.01). And sophomore Marley Thornton was 19th (25:33.34). Every single one of them is also on Crockett’s soccer team, as is Cesia Sanchez, who placed 29th (27:09.85).
“That makes what they achieved even more significant,” said assistant coach Charles Evans. “People don’t realize the work these girls put in to prepare themselves for this, and if you’re also playing soccer, you don’t often get to participate in organized cross-country practices. These girls run long distances on Saturday mornings and other times, with little outside motivation. There are no cheerleaders or bands playing or television crews. But they work and they work and they work some more. It’s so good to see that work rewarded like this.”
In the boys race, Aguirre finished sixth overall (18:21.82) and was only 46 seconds behind individual champion Clay Pruett of South Gibson County. Bailey – who only a year ago was battling cancer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis (more on that story coming later in November) – just missed a medal, placing 21st (19:51.32), but he grabbed the final available individual spot to be able to join Aguirre in the State meet.
“For freshmen to perform as well as these two did is tremendous,” an ecstatic Nass said. “Jose has been terrific all season, and to think of what Nathan has had to battle through just to be here just makes this extra special.”
The Division I-AA TSSAA State Championships will be held on Friday, November 6 at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis. The boys will run at 12:30 and the girls at 1:20 that afternoon.

Middle School Hoopsters Gain Split with Humboldt; Lady Cavs Now 4-1
By Ron Barry

Coach Jamar Turner played his entire roster Monday night as the Crockett County Middle School Lady Cavaliers improved their season record to 4-1 with a 37-2 trouncing of Humboldt in Alamo.
Playing only in the first half, Trinity Pankey netted 13 points and Jordin Bond tossed in 12 as the Lady Cavs raced to a 33-0 halftime advantage. Humboldt finally avoided a shutout with a third-quarter bucket, but Crockett’s reserves didn’t allow another point after that in sustaining the victory. Six other Lady Cavs added two points apiece in support of Pankey and Bond.
In the boys game, the talented Vikings rebounded from an early Crockett lead and outlasted the Cavaliers 40-34. Coach Tyler Gadlen’s Cavs once again had balanced scoring, with Jaylen Frye collecting nine, Jayce Cobb and Jordan Young eight each, and Reese Jones four, but Humboldt’s Andrew Ivy drilled in 21 to tip the scales in the visitors’ favor. The Cavs are now 3-2.

CCMS Girls Runners-Up in Blue Suede Tournament; Cavs Third in Boys Bracket
By Ron Barry

Crockett County Middle School’s girls tried to rally in the fourth quarter but fell just short and finished as runners-up in the annual Blue Suede Tournament at Medina, falling to host South Gibson 45-42 Saturday night.
Just prior to that contest, in the boys division third-place game, Crockett’s Jayce Cobb drilled a 30-foot buzzer be**er at the conclusion of overtime to give the Cavaliers a 50-47 win over Trenton.
In the girls game, Trinity Pankey scored 16 and Jordin Bond 14 for Coach Jamar Turner’s group, but South Gibson received a 22-point performance by Millie Prince to power the Lady Hornets to the championship. It was Crockett’s first loss after opening the season with three victories.
In the boys game, Cobb’s three-pointer capped a tremendous second-half turnaround for Coach Tyler Gadlen’s crew, who came to life after a disastrous first half and produced a 21-point fourth quarter just to send the game into overtime. Cobb’s bomb as time expired broke a 47-47 tie and improved the Cavs’ record to 3-1. Jordan Young had 13 points for the winners, Jaylen Frye added 10, Cobb netted nine, and Reese Jones had eight.
“We did not play great or very hard in the first half,” Gadlen said, “but we came out in the second half, corrected our body language and some mistakes and just played as hard as we could to force the overtime. Good things like that (Cobb’s 30-foot shot) happen when you play hard. I’m super proud of the toughness we played with.”

Cavalier Gridders Clinch Home Playoff Berth by Trouncing Chester County 62-21
By Ron Barry

Crockett County’s senior football players just earned themselves one more home game.
Coach Kevin Ward’s explosive Cavaliers clinched a second-place finish in the Region 7-4A standings Friday night by pounding Chester County 62-21 in Henderson and ensuring a host role for the opening round of the TSSAA playoffs in two weeks.
Crockett rolled up 490 yards in total offense on just 44 plays, never had to punt, survived two lost fumbles, and returned a pass interception for a score in totally dominating the game’s final 31 minutes after the hosts had forged a 14-14 tie with 7:13 to play in the second quarter. After that, it was all Cavaliers, all the time, as Ward’s club improved its season record to 8-1 with one more contest remaining in the regular season.
“It’s been a long time since we were 8-1 here,” Ward said after the game. “We really turned that game around in the last seven minutes of the first half. We did a lot of good things from then on. There are a lot of reasons to feel good about this team, and the couple of reasons not to, we’re going to fix.”
For the second straight game, senior running back DK Woods eclipsed the 200-yard mark, going for 217 and four touchdowns on just 21 carries. Woods now has 20 tallies on the season along with 1,241 yards, averaging better than 10 yards per carry.
And when he’s running that effectively, it opens up Crockett’s passing game. Senior quarterback Ben Burgess completed 8-of-9 throws Friday night for 126 yards and two more touchdowns, bringing his season total to 17. Crockett also received a 62-yard scoring run from Mason Dennis; a 56-yard interception return for a touchdown by Sq**rt Pickens; and a total defensive effort that held Chester County’s potent offense to under 175 yards.
The only serious blemish on the victory was the chippy behavior of both teams once Crockett had pulled safely ahead. The host Eagles were penalized 11 times for 123 yards in assessments. The Cavaliers were flagged 12 times for 104 yards, sometimes from retaliation moves but too often as instigators themselves.
But on the positive side, Burgess hit Pickens for a 36-yard touchdown pass less than a minute into the game, after Pickens had recovered a Chester County fumble on the opening kickoff. After the Eagles’ Ethan Talley raced 72 yards with a Crockett fumble to tie it back up, a scrambling Burgess found Titus Luten open for a 30-yard scoring strike just 11 seconds into the second quarter.
The hosts responded with a 10-play, 87-yard touchdown drive aided by a pair of Cav penalties. Quarterback Grayson Stewart ran it in from five yards out, and the duel was deadlocked at 14-14 with 7:13 to go before the break.
Woods capped a 50-yard march with a seven-yard sweep of left end to put Crockett back up 21-14 at the 3:34 mark, and two minutes later Pickens pilfered a Stewart pass just beyond midfield and snaked his way through tacklers all the way to the end zone to push the margin to 28-14 with 1:14 to play.
Crockett wasn’t through. Sandwiched by two incomplete passes, Cav lineman Carson Bridger sacked Stewart for a big seven-yard loss. Ward effectively used the Crockett timeouts to force an Eagle punt, and the Cavs caught a break when Chester punter Brayden Harrison planted his boot into the backside of one of his blockers, resulting in a two-yard kick that gave Crockett the ball at the Eagle 17 with 34 seconds still remaining.
After a 10-yard holding penalty against the Cavs, Pickens broke off a 25-yard run on a receiver sweep and Burgess executed a perfect quarterback sneak from the one to give the Cavs a 35-14 edge at the half. Cav kicker Noah Mayfield made all five of his extra-point attempts in the opening half.
After Pickens returned the third quarter kickoff 47 yards to midfield, Woods broke a couple of 20+-yard rushes and then scored from the two, giving Crockett a 42-14 lead a minute into the period. The Eagles answered with a 33-yard scoring pass from Jaden Weaver to Jordan Hunt, but Woods tallied twice more before the end of the quarter on runs of four and seven yards. Dennis closed the scoring with his long jaunt at 5:21 of the fourth.
Lexington’s 45-12 win over Hardin County Friday night gave the Tigers the top seed from Region7-4A for the playoffs. Crockett’s 5-1 region mark secured second place. Jackson North Side defeated South Gibson 48-29 and Dyer County toppled Jackson South Side – Crockett’s opponent in the regular-season finale – by a 42-12 count.
