Sixth Street Shelter assists families experiencing homelessness secure safe affordable housing

Located in Center City Allentown, Sixth Street Shelter provides safe, short-term housing for families of any configuration (including those with fathers and teenaged boys, multi-generational families, and those from the LGBTQ+ community) experiencing homelessness. The property has 25 private apartments, a Family Resource Center, playground, and full-choice food pantry for residents. Our 18-to 24-month transitional housing programs in Allentown and Easton make it possible for parents to pursue educational or vocational training while working towards self-sufficiency for themselves and their children. We believe that education and job training play an important and valuable role in helping families thrive while also ending the cycle of generational poverty. Sixth Street Shelter is a program of Community Action Lehigh Valley.

✨ Reading Rainbow gives our families a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together while fostering a love of reading.

Recently, Andy, a Planner at Community Action Lehigh Valley, read "A Toy Story" to our families, and the children enjoyed a fun Pizza Planet-themed party inspired by the book! 🍕🚀

📚 We're always looking for community members who would like to share the joy of reading with our kiddos. If you're interested in being a guest reader at a future Reading Rainbow event, please contact Marketing and Philanthropy Officer Lynn Schoof at [email protected].

🏠 Thank you to the students, faculty, and staff at Cedar Crest College for donating supplies for our Welcome Home Kits!

These special kits are given to families as they transition from the shelter into stable housing. Each kit includes cleaning supplies, a small appliance such as an air fryer or crock pot, and a gift card so families can enjoy their first dinner in their new home.

In addition to the supplies, students wrote heartfelt notes for the families, adding an extra touch of encouragement and support during this exciting new chapter.

Welcome Home Kits are a meaningful way to help families get settled and feel at home. To learn more about sponsoring a kit, visit: https://www.sixthstreetshelter.org/donate-supplies

☀️ Our families had a wonderful time at our Back-to-School Barbecue a few weeks ago at the Sixth Street Shelter!

Thanks to our incredible staff, families enjoyed delicious food and plenty of fun, including water balloons, bubbles, and activities for the kids. And because of the generosity of our community, our students headed back to school with the supplies they needed to start the year strong.

It was the perfect way to wrap up summer, and we can't wait to see all our kiddos learn, grow, and achieve great things this school year! ✏️🎒
