This evening our neighborhoods will be filled with ghosts, superheroes, princesses and plenty of other trick-or-treaters.

Drivers, slow down and stay extra alert in residential areas. Expect children to be walking near roadways, crossing streets and sometimes appearing from between parked vehicles. Put the phone down, take your time and watch carefully.

Parents and trick-or-treaters, use sidewalks when available, cross at safe locations and make sure costumes, flashlights or reflective materials help kids stay visible.

Have fun, enjoy the candy and help us make Halloween a safe night for everyone!

You’ll be haunted forever if you drink and drive this Halloween weekend. Before the night gets spooky and the drinks start pouring, plan for a sober ride

: Ankeny’s First Policewoman

Today, we recognize a trailblazer in Ankeny Police history, Joyce Lundstrom.

Joyce began serving Ankeny in 1967 as the city’s first police dispatcher. At the time, dispatching was quite different than it is today. Joyce answered calls for assistance around the clock, both at the police department and from home, all while raising four children.

In 1973, she graduated from the 28th Basic Law Enforcement Academy and became Ankeny’s first certified female police officer. She later became a School Resource Officer in 1975 and Ankeny’s first female police detective.

Throughout her career, Joyce had a passion for working with juveniles and troubled youth, community events and public education. She was heavily involved with Polk County Crime Stoppers and was recognized for her work in solving the 1985 Coin works robbery, which resulted in three arrests.

Joyce retired in 1994 after more than 25 years of service to Ankeny. Her career helped pave the way for generations of officers who followed, and her dedication to the community remains an important part of APD history.

Joyce's career of service and passion helped shape the Ankeny Police Department we know today and her memory lives on within the department.

Heads up, everyone! If you get a call claiming you or someone you know is in legal trouble and need to pay with Bitcoin or a gift card to "resolve a warrant" or “bond a loved one out of jail”. It’s a SCAM. Hang up, and do NOT give them any personal information!

Remember: Government agencies will NEVER ask for Bitcoin or gift cards to settle any legal issues. Don't fall for it!
