This week’s is Glee Club Presidents MIDN Micah Wilson from 35th Company and MIDN Jemma Bates from 21st Company.

MIDN Wilson hails from Charlotte, North Carolina and majors in Aerospace Engineering on the astronautical track. Hoping to become a Navy pilot, his reason behind coming to USNA is rooted in service for others.

“I did not come from a military background, but the rigor and discipline of military service, along with the opportunity to give back was alluring. The idea of a career in Naval Aviation drew me to the Academy in my initial application process. What has kept me here through hard times is the people. Getting to see my friends every day and make music with people who care about me, and who I can pour all of my effort into caring about, has been the best experience of my Academy career.”

MIDN Bates hails from Annapolis, Maryland, and majors in Political Science with a minor in Spanish. Hoping to become a Surface Warfare Officer, her reason behind coming to USNA is rooted in her faith and desire to serve her country.

“I am inspired towards a life of service by my parents. My dad enlisted in the Navy out of high school, graduated from the Academy in the class of 1995 and is still serving today. He is truly the best example I have ever known of passionate, servant leadership. My mom is the strongest and most loving person I know, always holding down the homefront with grace no matter what the Navy has thrown at us. Their examples of dedication, service and love are behind my “why” for coming to the Naval Academy. I hope to be able to pay forward the investment they have made in me and apply what I have learned by their examples to lead and take care of my sailors in the Fleet soon.”

Their favorite memories with the Glee Club include performing in Carnegie Hall, traveling to Japan to perform, and performing in the Naval Academy Chapel for Handel’s Messiah in December. They are looking forward to their set of performances in Hawaii this Spring Break.

With Navy Basketball tipping off Monday, we’re throwing it back to one of the greatest to ever wear the Blue and Gold, the “Admiral”, David Robinson.

After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1987, Robinson was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy and a month later was selected No. 1 overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Draft.

Robinson served on active duty at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, before making his NBA debut in 1989.

Before he became an NBA legend, he was a Naval officer.

Robinson led Navy to the Elite Eight in 1986. As a senior in 1987, he won both the Naismith and Wooden awards as the best player in college basketball.

Fans called Robinson “The Admiral.” He played in the 1988 Olympics while still serving in the Navy.

Robinson won two Olympic gold medals, two NBA championships, and the 1995 NBA MVP award. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. Off the court, he and his wife founded the Carver Academy in San Antonio. Robinson’s is a multi-dimensional story: Naval Academy graduate, Navy officer, NBA Hall of Famer, husband, father, and philanthropist.

Present! Arms!

The Brigade of Midshipmen took Worden field for their third and final formal parade of the fall season at the U.S. Naval Academy. USNA graduates from the classes of 1956, 1976, 1991, 2001, and 2006 gathered on the yard to watch the formation ahead of the homecoming football game.

The parade featured the first appearance of Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft (GARC) which joined our sailing team and Yard Patrol craft and other unmanned systems at the outset of the parade.

Our this week is Sergio Santander, the Yard Patrol Squadron Commodore.🚢

A member of 28th company from Fort Mill, South Carolina, MIDN Santander wanted to give back to his country alongside his brother who is a major in the Army medical corps.

“Growing up, I’ve never wanted to take those opportunities and freedoms for granted, and I came to the Naval Academy because I wanted to give something back. For me, serving in the Navy is a vocation, not simply a career choice. It’s exciting, but also humbling, to think about the responsibility of leading Sailors. I’m also looking forward to sharing Commissioning Week with my family, especially watching the Blue Angels together!”

Hoping to become a Navy pilot, one of his favorite summer trainings was detailing Plebe Summer.

“I enjoyed helping plebes mature into future leaders. It taught me how important it is to be both demanding and compassionate. Knowing that the people we were training could one day stand alongside us in harm’s way gave that responsibility a very real meaning.”

Outside of being an aerospace engineering major, MIDN Santander is involved in the Yard Patrol Squadron, VTNA, Catholic Midshipmen Club, and Naval Academy Wargaming Society around the Yard.

Marine Air-Ground Task Force on The Yard ⚓️

Midshipmen got hands-on experience exploring aspects of the MAGTF—including combat logistics, the ground combat element, naval aviation and emerging capabilities. The day featured static displays, tactical vehicles, and weapons systems, capped off with flight operations featuring the MV-22 Osprey, CH-53E Super Stallion, UH-1Y Huey, and AH-1 Cobra.

Everything midshipmen learn—academic excellence, resiliency, tenacity, and leadership—begins on The Yard. With 25% of each graduating class commissioning as Marine Corps officers, the MAGTF display is a key milestone where future leaders discover the incredible opportunities waiting for them in the Fleet Marine Force. 🦅🌎⚓️

: 1945 Lucky Bag. Alan B. Shepard Jr. attended the Naval Academy from Derry, New Hampshire. Because of the war, his class graduated a year early, on June 6, 1944, the same day Allied troops landed at Normandy

Shepard served on the destroyer USS Cogswell in the Pacific before earning his wings as a naval aviator and becoming a test pilot. In 1959 NASA picked him as one of the Mercury Seven, America’s first astronauts.

On May 5, 1961, Shepard rode Freedom 7 into space and became the first American to leave Earth. The flight lasted just over 15 minutes, and a Navy aircraft carrier, USS Lake Champlain, recovered him from the Atlantic.

Ten years later, Shepard commanded Apollo 14 and became the fifth person to walk on the Moon. Before he left, he hit two golf balls across the lunar surface. He retired as a rear admiral in 1974 and received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978.
