Sending a text takes a few seconds. Writing, addressing, and mailing a letter takes much longer, and that’s part of the point. Mrs. Morris’s Basic Skills Development students at South Dearborn High School wrote letters to someone special.

Each student composed a one-page letter, found the recipient’s mailing address, addressed an envelope, and mailed it. Alongside learning to write a formal email, students talked through the differences between a letter, an email, and a text. Many came away feeling that a handwritten letter is more personal than a quick message. ✉️

In one corner of Mrs. Strasemeier’s second-grade classroom at Dillsboro Elementary School, a small group was reading "Growing Antlers." Across the room, students were reading silently, writing about their fall break, and rolling dice to decide how to write their spelling words.

Every student had something to do, and every activity built a skill: reading fluency, writing, and spelling. Working independently while their teacher focused on a small group also gave students practice at staying on task by themselves.

To the eye, the light from two different elements can look almost the same. Through a spectroscope, it doesn’t. Mr. Walter’s science students at South Dearborn High School learned the difference by viewing the emission spectra of multiple elements with handheld spectroscopes.

Each element showed its own pattern of colored lines, and students used those patterns to solve a final challenge: identifying an unknown element on their own.

Cybersecurity can sound like something that only happens to other people, until a seventh-grader researches why someone would want access to their personal information. Ms. Gabbard’s Computer Science Foundations students at South Dearborn Middle School did exactly that this week.

They also examined the consequences of cyberbullying and learned about Identity & Access Management careers, jobs focused on deciding who is allowed into a system. Then they played in a “Cyber Lockdown” card game tournament, where each team had to plan carefully and work together.

Cards in hand, partners everywhere, and a room full of students reading aloud. Ms. Gabbard’s students at Aurora Elementary School played Quiz, Quiz, Trade! to put their red words, also called sight words, to use after several days of practice.

Here’s how it works: partners show each other a word, read it aloud, and use it in a sentence. Then they trade cards and find a new partner. Every round gave students another chance to read and say the words, and the movement kept the room full of smiles.

The assignment: build a roller coaster, then make it knock down a Lego man and land the marble in a cup. Mr. Walter’s AP Physics students at South Dearborn High School took it on as part of their study of mechanical energy.

Every coaster needed an initial drop, an additional hill, a vertical loop, and a double corkscrew. Getting the marble through all of them meant understanding how its height turns into speed and how much energy it keeps along the way. The Lego man and the cup were the final test of whether the design worked.
