Washington County Mental Health Services Community Mental Health Center - offering a wide variety of support and treatment opportunities for children, adolescents, families, and adults

Washington County Mental Health Services (WCMHS) is designated by Vermont Statute to provide a wide variety of support and treatment opportunities for children, adolescents, families, and adults living with the challenges of mental illness, emotional and behavioral issues, and developmental disabilities. These services are both office and community-based through outreach. The range of services offered includes prevention and wellness, assessment and stabilization, and 24 hours a day, 7 days a week emergency response. WCMHS is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit Community Mental Health Center. The agency was established under this name in 1967 and proudly celebrates over 45 years of serving our community. We take a flexible approach to person-centered care for citizens within Washington County and the adjacent towns of Orange, Washington and Williamstown. Guidelines for acceptance and participation in our programs are the same for everyone without regard to race, color, national origin, or religion. Our dedicated staff works to assist each individual to reach his or her goals. Within the last year, approximately 5,000 individuals (8% of the population of Washington County) benefited from the services offered by WCMHS. Five percent of these individuals participated in multiple programs offered across the agency’s divisions, receiving direct services. The remaining 3% were served through educational sessions, community forums, extended family and other non-billable services.

Feel Good Friday: A reminder to vote next week or early.

This week on , John Holbein (University of Virginia) and Julie Silverbrook (National Constitution Center) share practical advice for families with kids of all ages, ahead of the midterms.

Here's what stood out to us at WCMHS: the same things that build strong civic habits; belonging, routine, feeling heard, and doing things together are also the things that support mental wellness in kids.

A few ideas from the conversation:
🔹Bring little ones to the polls and narrate what's happening
🔹 Vote on small family decisions at home let kids see their voice count
🔹 Make registration a milestone worth celebrating for first-time voters
🔹 Keep the tradition going with adult children a text, a call, a shared plan to vote

Civic participation is one more way families build connection. And connection is protective.

👉 Listen in, then tell us: what's one civic habit your family shares?

How can families make voting and civic participation a habit that starts long before the first trip to the ballot box?

This week on , John Holbein of the University of Virginia and Julie Silverbrook, chief content and learning officer at the National Constitution Center, share practical civic advice for families with children of all ages ahead of the midterm elections. They discuss introducing young kids to elections, making voting a family experience, helping first-time voters navigate registration paperwork and explore ways to celebrate voting milestones and continue family voting traditions with adult children.

Feel Good Fridays: Meaningful community support.

Thank you to the employees of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust for choosing Washington County Mental Health Services to receive a $1,686 donation through their Casual for a Cause program!

Employees contribute throughout the year in exchange for wearing casual attire on Fridays, turning an everyday workplace tradition into support for local nonprofits.

Your generosity strengthens our ability to be there for those navigating mental health, substance use, and developmental and intellectual disability challenges often when they need us most.

We’re grateful to work in a community where local businesses and their employees see the value of this work and choose to be part of it. Thank you for showing up for our neighbors!

Together, we stand up, speak out, and walk for hope.

On Sunday, October 4, members of the WCMHS community gathered on the Vermont State House lawn in Montpelier for the Central Vermont Out of the Darkness Walk.

We walked to raise awareness about su***de prevention, honor lives lost, support those affected by su***de, and remind one another that no one has to face their struggles alone.

Thank you to everyone from WCMHS who showed up with compassion and a shared commitment to our community. Every conversation, connection, and step can help bring hope.
