Although leaves are naturally occurring and biodegradable, when not managed properly, they can cause serious harm to our waterways. Leaves are composed of nutrients that are excellent fertilizers for your garden, but harmful to freshwater systems.
Here are some helpful reminders to reduce the harmful runoff by leaves during collection weeks:
🍂Easiest way is to mulch while you mow! Consider chopping the leaves up with the mower to put in your garden beds or around your trees to act as a natural fertilizer.
🍂Check the collection guide for when collections are scheduled. If we're in between collection weeks, don't rake your leaves to the road until the day before.
🍂Check your ditch, culvert, and any nearby storm drains after collection week. Clear these areas of any leaf debris.
