🚧 TRAFFIC ALERT: CANAL BRIDGE REHABILITATION PROJECT 🚧

NCDOT is beginning a rehabilitation project on the Canal Bridge TODAY, Friday, October 30, on NC 273 (South Point Road) near the Duke Energy plant.

Here's what motorists need to know:

✅ THE ROAD AND BRIDGE WILL REMAIN OPEN with rotating lane closure. No full closure is planned.

🔀 SIGNED DETOUR: NCDOT's contractor is setting up a signed detour to help reduce traffic volume while crews prepare the bridge for repairs. If you can use the detour, please do!

🚦 FLAGGERS ON SITE: Local traffic will be managed by flaggers. Motorists should expect brief stops as crews conduct lane closures.

Please plan a little extra travel time, slow down when traveling through the work zone, and give road crews plenty of room to work safely.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as NCDOT completes these important improvements! 🚧

☕️🚔 A THANK YOU FROM CHIEF PULLEN 🙏🏼

“ Thank you to everyone who came out to our first Coffee with the Chief! It was great to spend the morning connecting with members of our community, sharing conversations, answering questions, and hearing your thoughts and ideas.

Building a safer, stronger Belmont starts with open communication and strong relationships between our officers and the people we serve. Opportunities like this remind us how important it is to listen, learn from one another, and work together to make our community an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

I appreciate everyone who took the time to stop by and enjoy a cup of coffee, and be part of the conversation. Thank you for being part of what makes Belmont such a special community!”

⚠️🅿️PARKING RULES REMINDER 🅿️⚠️

To help keep our streets safe, accessible, and moving smoothly, we want to remind everyone that parking regulations remain in effect and are actively enforced.

Improper parking can create safety hazards, obstruct pedestrian access, limit visibility, and interfere with emergency response. We ask everyone to do their part by parking responsibly and respecting the rules that help keep our community safe.

Common violations, include:
🚫 Blocking Sidewalks or Crosswalks
🚒 Parking in Fire Lanes or near Hydrants
➕ Parking Within 25' of an Intersection
⬅️ Parking with Left Side to Curb
📬 Blocking Driveways / Mail Boxes

Please take a moment to review city parking regulations and make sure your vehicle is parked legally. Parking rules are in place for everyone’s safety and convenience, and violations may result in citations.

Around 11 p.m. on October 6, 2026, Belmont officers observed a vehicle traveling on Park Street in Belmont and witnessed several traffic violations, including careless and reckless driving. The vehicle nearly collided with several motorists. Based on the driver’s actions, officers believed the driver was intoxicated and that the manner of driving posed a danger to the public.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver fled from Park Street onto northbound I-85 at a high rate of speed. Belmont officers pursued the vehicle to Thomasboro Drive in Charlotte, where it struck a telephone pole.

The driver failed to obey officers commands and fled on foot. Belmont Police K9 Bandit and his handler conducted a track and located the suspect hiding in the bed of a truck approximately half a mile from the crash scene.

The suspect is a juvenile. The vehicle he fled in had been reported stolen in Charlotte.

The Belmont Police Department thanks the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for its assistance.

Congratulations, Chief Corky Falls on a well-deserved retirement!

Corky Falls has served for thirty-one years in his law enforcement career. Corky has shown exceptional leadership and dedication, leaving behind a profound legacy.
