Health care is only truly available when it is accessible.
Accessibility can include wheelchair-accessible entrances and exam rooms, accessible medical equipment, communication supports, reasonable modifications, and information provided in formats patients can use.

Removing barriers helps ensure people with disabilities can participate fully in their own health care.

Access to health care is a disability rights issue. People with disabilities have the right to receive health care without discrimination and to have an equal opportunity to access services.
That includes accessible facilities and equipment, effective communication, reasonable modifications, and being treated with dignity and respect. Everyone deserves health care that is accessible, equitable, and centered on their needs.

Halloween is for everyone!

A little flexibility can help make Halloween more welcoming for children and adults with disabilities.

Some people may not communicate verbally. Some may use mobility devices. Costumes may look different to accommodate medical or sensory needs. Someone may not be able to say, “trick or treat,” make eye contact, reach into a candy bowl, or approach a crowded doorway. None of those things make someone less deserving of being included in the fun.

This Halloween, skip the assumptions, practice patience, and make room for everyone to participate in the way that works for them.

What happens if your workplace accommodation request is denied?

A denial does not necessarily mean the conversation has to end. Depending on the circumstances, there may be other effective accommodations that can address the workplace barrier.

Ask why the accommodation was denied, discuss possible alternatives, keep records of your requests and conversations, and learn about your employment rights.

If you believe your disability rights have been violated, resources may be available to help you understand your options.

The Protection & Advocacy Project attended the Vocational Rehabilitation Conference last week to share information about two programs that help individuals with disabilities navigate employment-related challenges: the Client Assistance Program (CAP) and Protection and Advocacy for Beneficiaries of Social Security (PABSS).

These programs help individuals understand their rights, access resources, and address barriers to employment. By connecting individuals with the support and information they need, we can help promote greater independence and opportunities for competitive integrated employment.

Employers play an important role in building accessible and inclusive workplaces.

Resources are available to help employers better understand reasonable accommodations, disability employment rights, accessible hiring practices, tax incentives, and strategies for recruiting and retaining employees with disabilities.

Creating an inclusive workplace does not require knowing every answer. It starts with being willing to learn, communicate, and remove barriers.
