Heading into our last three days to visit the Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace in Boone, Iowa this week. We had a huge weekend of visitors last week including a tour bus of 34 from Southeastern Iowa on Saturday. Make sure you visit this coming Thursday, Friday or Saturday(Halloween, our last day of the 2026 season). We'll then be open next June on Thursday, June 3rd to start the 2027 season. We always are looking for tour guides and would love to have you join our team so we can be open for visitors to the Birthplace next season.
Thanks to the 4 Boone High School students: Kevin, Javier, Jackson, and Anthony for their help getting our picnic tables put away for the Winter. Their help is appreciated so much. Makes a big job easy to do.
On October 10th, we were able to tag our last 3 Monarch butterflies and with the help of others use up all 50 tags that were purchased from the Monarch Butterfly Network. We even had 5 Monarchs on the property on October 24th. Those tagged butterflies migrate to a mountainous area of Mexico and if any of our tags are found that data will be shared with the University of Kansas. From there we can see if any of our Boone Monarchs completed their journey to Mexico. The Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace and Museum is a registered Monarch Waystation providing food, water, shelter, and milkweed for these butterflies. We sell the seeds for flowers that attract Monarchs and other butterflies and insects in our gift shop for $3.00. These seeds can be planted next Spring to attract butterflies to your yard. These seeds were grown and harvested from the Birthplace's gardens.
A book sale and flower seed sale will be held Sunday, November 8th from 1:30 - 3:30. Come in the backdoor of the house and go downstairs to buy books or seeds. Cash only. The books are extra copies of books we already have in our library. The books have been reduced in price to $1.00 per book and $3.00 per packet of seeds. We have zinnia, black eyed susans, and purple cone flower seeds for sale. You can also purchase anything else in the gift shop that day too.

This is the October that all Boone and Boone County citizens who have never toured the Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace need to plan a visit before we close for the 2026 season on October 31st. Remember your kids can take the tour for free because of a grant we have that covers their admission. Come discover the hidden gem of a museum that highlights Boone's First Lady, Mamie Eisenhower. For our Country's 250th anniversary, plan a visit in this special year.
Mamie Eisenhower was the first First Lady to decorate the White House for Halloween. She invited all of the staffs' wives for an Autumn party. Pumpkins, squash, corn stalks, and other Halloween decorations greeted her guests.
After suffering a stroke in late September, Mamie spent the entire month of October 1979 hospitalized at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. On October 31, 1979, she famously told her granddaughter, Mary Jean, that she would pass away the following day. She died peacefully in her sleep on November 1, 1979.
We really need to have people from Boone and Boone County step up to be tour guides. You can help the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace and Museum out by donating financially or by donating your time to help us maintain the Birthplace. Looking ahead to the 2027 season, we need volunteer tour guides so we can keep the house open for our visitors from around the World. We've had visitors this year from Sweden and Scotland and States from all over America. We'll train you, give you the information you need, and have you shadow an experienced tour guide before doing it on your own. It is a very rewarding experience to meet people from everywhere who are interested in history and in Mamie's Boone story. If you interested please call 515-432-1896 and leave your contact information and we'll get back to you. Even helping be a tour guide once a month or even once a week would be an amazing help so we can be open for our visitors. "Many hands makes light work." We'd love to have you as part of our team. The last two year's, we've had record numbers of visitors so your help to keep the house open for our visitors is so important and rewarding knowing that you are keeping Mamie's contributions to our Country open for our visitors to learn about. She is an important part of America's 250 year history.
Another way to help Mamie's Birthplace is to get an annual or lifetime membership for yourself or someone you know and that would be great way to celebrate our Country's great history and also support the Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace Foundation. Receive free tours during open hours as long as your membership remains active!

We will be open for tours Pufferbilly Days weekend Thursday - Sunday. We'll open on Saturday after the Pufferbilly Days Parade is completed around noon. If you are looking for something in the afternoon to do that weekend while you are in town be sure to stop by. This is something you can only do in Boone, Iowa, so come explore the history of Boone's First Lady, Mamie Doud Eisenhower.
We held our second Monarch Tagging Event sponsored by the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace and Museum and Boone County Conservation. The monarchs have to cooperate for an event like this to be successful and even though there were 2 monarchs on our zinnias before the event started, during the hour and a half event, we saw no monarchs but a lot of Painted Lady butterflies. Thanks to the 3 people who attended that night and said they learned a lot about monarchs and tagging, but we were unable to tag a single butterfly. So we'll be going over to the yard and checking the zinnias to see if we have any Monarchs we can tag before their migration season leaves Iowa. So far we've tagged 2 Monarch butterflies this way, both females. We are still selling seed packets that attract butterflies in our gift shop so if you'd like to purchase seeds that were harvested and packaged from the Mamie Birthplace gardens, just stop by the house when we are open. Even though the planting season is done this year, they can be planted next Spring so you can enjoy butterflies and flowers from this historic site's gardens.
September was the birth month of Mamie and Ike's first son, Doud Dwight "Icky" Eisenhower, was born on September 24, 1917, in San Antonio, Texas. He later tragically passed away from scarlet fever at three years old. He was so beloved by the tank battalion that Ike was training at Fort C**t, which was on the same battlefield as Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg, that the men in the company had made a little military uniform for Doud to wear as he was like a mascot to the company. Mamie and Ike both said his passing was the hardest thing they had to deal with in their lives. Doud is buried with his parents in Abilene, Kansas at the Place of Meditation on the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum.
You can help the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace and Museum out by donating financially or by donating your time to help us maintain the Birthplace. We'd like to highlight one of our Mamie docents and she also serves on our Mamie Board of Directors for her recognition for the many hours she volunteers for us giving tours, daily watering and weeding of our gardens, and serving on the Mamie Board, and she also volunteers at IMPACT here in Boone and other organizations for being recognized with the 2026 Governor's Volunteer Award. Thank you Mary Dawkins for all you do in this community.
We really need to have people who are like Mary from Boone and Boone County step up to be tour guides especially on the weekends of September and October to finish out this 2026 season. You can help the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace and Museum out by donating financially or by donating your time to help us maintain the Birthplace. We also had two Boone Middle schoolers stop at the house this month and say "They drive by on their scooters all of the time and just wanted to see what was in the house." The docent was already giving a tour to five adults and the boys joined that tour and were genuinely interested in the history of the house. Even taking a selfie with Mamie and Ike's cutout in the museum downstairs. The docent and the 5 out of town adults commented on how well behaved and polite the boys were, so their parents should be proud. Remember Kindergarten through high schoolers can tour the Birthplace for free, we usually ask that they are with a paying adult, but if you too want to find out what's in the house and are genuinely interested in its history we welcome you to stop by for a tour on your own.
We will be open for tours Pufferbilly Days weekend Thursday - Sunday. We'll open on Saturday after the Pufferbilly Days Parade is completed around noon. If you are looking for something in the afternoon to do that weekend while you are in town be sure to stop by. These pictures include some of the patterns you can look for while touring the Birthplace.
