UPDATE: BALLAD HEALTH SYSTEMS RESTORED

October 29, 2026 | 4:20 p.m. Eastern

At 4:20 p.m., the Southwest Virginia EMS Council was notified that Ballad Health had isolated the problem and its IT teams had restored all systems. At this time, all operations are reported to be functioning normally.

The earlier Epic and IT outage affected the normal forwarding of field EKGs to ED physicians, ESO Outcomes updates, patient facesheets, interfacility transport documentation, and access to radiology images.

During the outage, Ballad’s Medical Control Physician in the Clinical Command Center reviewed EMS-transmitted EKGs as a temporary measure.

The earlier downtime advisory is now superseded by this restoration update.

Please share this update with your crews, supervisors, and personnel coordinating patient transfers. Thank you to Ballad Health’s clinical, communications, and IT teams for their work throughout this disruption.

Sunday was another busy day for EMS education in Southwest Virginia. We concluded our TECC and PHTLS courses, along with the Infection Control Update and EVOS course.

We also held our second Beyond Friday Night Lights: Sports Medicine for EMS course at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. EMS providers used the immersion room and footage of the Virginia High School football team to practice responding to a realistic injured-athlete scenario. The sights, sounds, and distractions of a Friday night game helped make the experience feel real and gave providers a chance to practice working together during an athletic emergency.

Thank you to Bristol Virginia Public Schools, the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, and everyone who helped make this training possible. We’re proud to bring this specialized program to EMS providers across our region.

I want to thank all of those that took time to attend as students and those that instructed each and every program.

Mark your calendars for October 2 and 3, 2027. We’ll host our Second Annual Southwest Virginia EMS Symposium and look forward to welcoming everyone back!

If there is a course that you would like to see us add to next years weekend please feel free to reach out to us and let us know so we can add that to the list. We hope to grow this event every year and make it an experience that EMS providers from across the region looks forward to each year.

See you next year in October!!!!

What a great first day of EMS education in Southwest Virginia!

Today was a big success at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon. Providers from across the area participated in GEMS, ACLS, PHTLS, and TECC, making it a full day of learning, skills, and professional development.

Students participating in today’s educational programs had access to some of the state-of-the-art educational technology available at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, and tomorrow’s students will have that same opportunity. This includes the Regional Simulation Lab, the Anatomage Table, and the Immersion Room. These incredible resources allow us to take EMS education beyond the traditional classroom by providing hands-on, interactive learning experiences where students can explore anatomy and injuries, practice critical skills, and participate in realistic scenarios. We are excited to be able to incorporate this level of technology and simulation into EMS education right here in Southwest Virginia.

Tomorrow, we’ll be back with another full day of education, including:

🚑 PALS
🚑 EVOS – Classroom Only
🚑 Continuation of TECC
🚑 PHTLS
🏈 Sports Medicine for EMS

We are especially excited to offer our new Sports Medicine for EMS program!

If you have not registered for Sports Medicine for EMS but would like to participate, come on out to the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center tomorrow morning. The class starts at 9:00 a.m.

This is a great opportunity to be part of a new program that has just launched here in Southwest Virginia. As one of the first groups of EMS providers to participate, you will not only receive the education and hands-on experience from the course, but you will also have the opportunity to provide feedback that will help us continue improving and developing the program for EMS providers across our region and beyond.

If your agency provides standby coverage for high school athletics, especially Friday night football, or if you simply want to become better prepared to manage sports-related emergencies, we would love to have you join us tomorrow morning.

Come learn with us, put your skills to work, and help us build the future of Sports Medicine for EMS in Southwest Virginia.
