🔥🏠 FIREPLACE SAFETY REMINDER 🏠🔥

As the temperatures drop and fireplace season gets underway, we want to remind everyone to take the proper precautions to keep your home and family safe!

A warm, cozy fire is a great way to beat the cold, but fireplace safety starts before you light the first fire!

Here are a few important safety tips:

🧹 Inspect Your Chimney: Have your chimney inspected and cleaned regularly by a qualified professional to prevent creosote buildup.

🪵 Burn the Right Fuel: Only burn seasoned, dry wood in your wood-burning fireplace. Never burn trash, cardboard, or treated wood.

🛡️ Use a Fireplace Screen: Help prevent sparks and embers from escaping into your living space.

📏 Keep Your Distance: Keep furniture, rugs, decorations, and other combustible materials at least 3 feet away from the fireplace.

🚫 Never Leave a Fire Unattended: Make sure the fire is completely extinguished before going to bed or leaving your home.

🪣 Dispose of Ashes Safely: Place ashes in a covered metal container and store it outside, away from your home and anything combustible. Ashes can retain heat for days!

🚨 Check Your Alarms: Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are working properly.

Keep these tips, along with those in the graphic, in mind as the temperatures drop and you start using your fireplace more frequently!

🔥🚒 Fire Prevention Week is in full swing! 🚒🔥

We kicked off the week with our friends at Highland Elementary, and now we’re on to Rossmoyne Elementary!

Throughout the week, students are learning important fire safety lessons, including:
🔥 The importance of working smoke detectors
🏡 Choosing a safe family meeting place
🧑‍🚒 Understanding the different pieces of a firefighter’s gear — and why we wear them
🚒 Getting an up-close look at our fire trucks and equipment
💨 Practicing how to safely crawl low below the smoke with the help of our smoke trailer

One of our favorite parts of Fire Prevention Week is getting to spend time with the kids, hear their questions, and help them feel comfortable around firefighters and our gear.

A huge thank you to our wonderful career and volunteer members who take the time to make these visits possible. We love getting out into our community, sharing what we know, and helping teach the next generation how to stay safe!

Lower Allen Township is hiring a Fire Chief!

Lower Allen Township is currently accepting applications for Fire Chief of the Division of Fire & Rescue Services (DFRS).

DFRS is the Township department that coordinates fire and rescue services in Lower Allen. Lower Allen Fire Company maintains its identity as an independent volunteer organization while working in close partnership with DFRS as part of the Township’s overall fire and rescue service.

Our career and volunteer members train together, respond together, and share a commitment to providing the best possible service to Lower Allen Township.

The Fire Chief plays an important role in that partnership, providing leadership for DFRS while working collaboratively with Lower Allen Fire Company and Township leadership.

We look forward to welcoming our next Fire Chief and continuing to build on the strong partnership between DFRS and Lower Allen Fire Company.

Last night, LAFC members Chris Trace, Life Member and Cumberland County Fire Chiefs Association President Dave Warren, and District Assistant Chief Steve Overmiller had the honor of attending the 2026 Cumberland County Fire & EMS Memorial Service. This year’s service held special significance as our community gathered to honor our fallen fire and EMS personnel while commemorating the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

As we mark 25 years since that tragic day, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, including the firefighters, EMS providers, law enforcement officers, and other first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice. We also remember those who answered the call in the days, months, and years that followed.

Here at Lower Allen, that history has a permanent place at our station. Displayed at the front of our station is a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, serving as a lasting memorial and a daily reminder of the lives lost, the bravery shown, and the sacrifices made on September 11, 2001.

For our members and our community, it is a reminder that even as the years pass, we continue to honor their courage, their service, and their sacrifice.

25 years later, we will never forget. 🇺🇸

National Night Out: Tuesday, August 4, 2026

National Night Out was originally established as an event in the 1980’s to build and strengthen stronger police-community relationships between local communities and law enforcement and heighten crime prevention awareness in the United States. In the early 1990's, the Lower Allen Township Police Department worked with many neighborhoods to organize crime watch groups. On the first Tuesday in August each year, these groups hosted block parties in conjunction with National Night Out to build better relationships with neighbors, while working together to address crime and other police-related issues. We are seeking assistance from communities throughout Lower Allen Township to help take this event back to its roots.

To date, three communities in Lower Allen Township are planning events in their neighborhood: Orchard Apartments on Cedar Run Drive (4-6 PM), Highland Park at the playground on Chatham Road (6-8 PM), and Cressman Manor on Morningside Drive (6-8 PM). Police, EMS, and the Division of Fire Rescue Services (DFRS) will support these local efforts by sending staff and volunteers to these communities to visit with residents.

Please reach out today to find out how easy it is to host an event in your area. Email Dianna Knisley at [email protected] or call (717) 975-7575 x 1602. Also, please check the Lower Allen Township Police Department’s CrimeWatch page for further information as we hope to add additional locations.

A small event will also be held at the Lower Allen Township Municipal Services Center (MSC), located at 2233 Gettysburg Road, Camp Hill on Tuesday, August 4, from 6-8 PM. Residents who do not have an event planned in their surrounding neighborhood community are encouraged to stop by the event at the MSC.

⚠️ GENERATOR SAFETY: PLEASE READ & SHARE ⚠️

Recently, the Upper Allen Fire Department responded to two separate calls for Carbon Monoxide alarms, and both incidents were entirely due to improper generator use.

When the power goes out, generators are a great asset, but they can be deadly if used incorrectly. Carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and can kill in as little as 5 minutes.

We are asking everyone in the community to take 60 seconds to carefully read through the infographic below. It contains critical, life-saving instructions on backup power safety.

🚨 Safety Tips:
The 20-Foot Rule: Always keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, and windows, with the exhaust facing away. Never run them in a garage or enclosed space.

Transfer Switches: Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet. To power your home's electrical system safely and prevent dangerous backfeeding, a professional transfer switch is required.

CO Alarms: Ensure you have working carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas.
If your CO alarm goes off or you start experiencing dizziness, headaches, or nausea: get to fresh air immediately and call 911.

📢 Please share this post with your neighbors to help keep Upper Allen safe!

Just as we wrapped up responding to more than 50 calls from Saturday’s storm, our first responders continued working tirelessly through the night to answer emergencies from the second round of severe weather.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication of our firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement, public works crews, utility workers, and everyone who has been working around the clock to keep our community safe.

As additional rain moves through the area, please do your part to help keep everyone safe:

🌧️ Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Never drive through flooded roadways—you can’t tell how deep the water is or if the road beneath has been washed away.

🌊 Stay away from creeks, streams, and other fast-moving water, as water levels can rise quickly and currents can be stronger than they appear.

🍃 If it is safe to do so, take a few minutes to clear leaves and debris from storm drains near your home. Keeping storm drains clear can help reduce localized flooding.

Please continue to use caution, be patient as crews respond to ongoing incidents, and thank you for doing your part to help keep our community safe.
