F: (615) 735-3475 Carthage is a town in Smith County, Tennessee.

It is the county seat of Smith County, and perhaps best known as the hometown of former Vice President Al Gore, and his father, Senator Albert Gore, Sr. The earliest known settler in what is now Carthage was William Walton (1760–1816), who arrived in the late 1780s. Around 1800, Walton directed the construction of the Walton Road (Cumberland Turnpike), an early stage coach route connecting the Knoxville area with Middle Tennessee. The road, which paralleled what is now US-70, would prove influential in the early settlement of the Cumberland region.

Honoring a Life of Service and Friendship

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of a dedicated councilman, cherished friend, and true pillar of our community.

For eight years, Mr. Sam Petty faithfully served on the City Council, but his commitment to our community extended far beyond the position he held. He was a friend to all, someone who genuinely cared about the people around him and always made others feel valued, respected, and heard.

He approached every conversation and every decision with kindness, consideration, logic, and reason. He understood that serving a community meant listening to its people, appreciating different perspectives, and recognizing that every voice mattered. Whether you agreed or disagreed, he treated everyone with the same dignity and respect.

Sam's legacy will not simply be measured by the eight years he spent serving on the council, but by the countless lives he touched, the friendships he built, and the example he set through his compassion, humility, and dedication to others.

Our community has lost more than a public servant. We have lost a friend, a steady voice of reason, and a genuinely good person who made our community a better place simply by being part of it.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his kindness, service, and legacy will not be forgotten.
