Charleston, WV Police Department The official Facebook for the Charleston Police Department Our goal is to recognize ways to make the community as safe as possible to work and live in.

The Community Policing Bureau is comprised of several units which include the Bicycle Patrol, Highway Safety, and Traffic Division. Community Policing works with the citizens of Charleston to achieve a better understanding of the concerns and needs for a safer neighborhood. We work in a collaborative effort with the citizens to meet those needs through programs such as Dare, Citizens Police Academy, Neighborhood Watch, and the Neighborhood Assistance Officer program. As well, we strive to make our streets and highways safer by participating in local, state and national level programs to combat impaired driving. We actively pursue impaired drivers who are either under the influence of drugs, alcohol or otherwise and choose to operate a motor vehicle upon our roads. As well, protection and safety of children is a prime goal of the Charleston Police Department. Community Policing takes protecting our children very seriously. With programs such as Dare, Safety City, and Child Passenger Safety, we strive to educate the children and their parents on ways to avoid danger and make good decisions. Success is defined by those children who become healthy adults and productive members of society. Community Policing is located in the old Roosevelt Junior High School at Ruffner Avenue and Jackson Street.

🎃 HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS! 👻🍬

Halloween is right around the corner, and the Charleston Police Department wants everyone to have a fun and safe night! Before your little ghosts and goblins head out for trick-or-treating, keep these safety tips in mind:

🚸 Stay Visible: Wear bright colors, reflective materials, or carry a flashlight or glow stick so drivers can see you.

🚦 Cross Safely: Use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible. Look both ways before crossing and never assume a driver sees you.

🚗 Drivers, Slow Down! Expect increased pedestrian traffic, especially in residential neighborhoods. Put the phone down, stay alert, and watch for children who may unexpectedly enter the roadway.

🍬 Check the Candy: Parents should inspect treats before allowing children to eat them. Avoid anything that appears opened, damaged, or tampered with.

🏠 Stick to Well-Lit Areas: Only approach homes with porch lights on, and never enter a stranger's home or vehicle.

📱 Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Avoid distractions like phones while walking, especially when crossing streets.

🎃 A little extra caution goes a long way toward making sure Halloween is memorable for all the right reasons!

Happy Halloween from the Charleston Police Department!

🎓 Congratulations to the graduates of our 32nd Citizen Police Academy!

For the past ten weeks, these dedicated community members have spent every Thursday evening with us, getting a firsthand look at what we do and learning more about the Charleston Police Department.

The Citizen Police Academy is a great opportunity for us to open our doors, share our experiences, and build stronger relationships with the people we serve.

We appreciate each of you taking time out of your busy schedules to get to know us a little better. We hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we enjoyed having you!

Congratulations, Class ###II! 👏

🚨 Update: WV DOH and DEP are now advising the westbound slow lane will also be closed from Leon Sullivan Way to the Lee Street on ramp during this time.
-------
🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT: I-64 WESTBOUND

The Lee Street on-ramp to I-64 West is currently closed due to a diesel spill.

The ramp and adjacent shoulder are expected to remain closed for approximately 4 to 8 hours while cleanup crews work. There is a chance this can impact the evening commute. We will update this post when it is back open.

Motorists needing to access I-64 West can use the Virginia Street entrance ramp.

Please use caution in the area and allow extra time for travel.

Throwback Thursday

Back when aviators and mustaches were all the rage and still are apparently.

Since the only officer who was probably working in 1983 and is still employed by us, Sgt. Keith Peoples, was unavailable for comment, here's what we know.

This photograph was taken on Keystone Drive in 1983 during what appears to have been a search for a fugitive.

We know who the officers are, but we will let them chime in themselves if they like!
