On Sunday, September 27, we took a group of folks on a guided hike of the Deer Creek Preserve in Tehama County. CDFW Biologist Matt Johnson joined us to talk about the importance of Deer Creek to endangered spring run Chinook salmon (SRCS). Deer Creek, along with Mill and Butte Creeks, are the three remaining watersheds that provide spawning habitat for wild runs of SRCS. The Deer Creek Preserve hosts a fish ladder at Lower Deer Creek falls, that provide salmon passage to a few more miles of Deer Creek until they reach Upper Deer Creek falls, which is impassable to these fish. Aided by helicopters, the fish ladder was updated in 2018.
This hike, which usually occurs the last weekend in September, is one of many FREE hikes the land trusts hosts from March-October every year. Keep an eye on our events page to take advantage of these opportunities so that you, too, can Take A Hike with us!
