Kiwanis Club of Coldwater We are volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan.

In the early years, members focused on business networking. In 1916, Kiwanis became an international organization with the creation of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario. In 1919, the organization changed its focus to service. By 1962, worldwide expansion was approved. In 1987, women officially were allowed into the membership.

👩‍⚖️Monday’s program featured Julianna Cowles, Kenna Niedzwiecki and Jalianna Zepeda representing YMCA Youth in Government. This is a student-run, student-lead leadership experience where they don’t just learn about democracy - they practice it.

These students offered an excellent presentation with poise, enthusiasm, and command of the topic. Coldwater students have been active and very successful over the years and champions for Mock Trial. This year there are 40 students active in the program.

The students can participate in many categories of government experiences such as legislative, national issues forum, mock trial, legislative oversight, press, lobbyist, secretary of state (running the elections), government cabinets, and presiding officer positions. Political parties are not part of the process. The program focuses on how the process works and how it comes together to write legislation and run government.

We thank these students for being our guest speakers this week. Next week we will have a social evening meeting at Hope Cafe.

Goodwill is more than just a thrift store, and their Workforce Development/Community Partnership's mission focus is helping the working poor, essentially.

See the fliers attached to this post to learn about:
đź’µ Financial literacy program (10 weeks of classes (in Battle Creek, currently) to help teach you how to manage your money. Goodwill will even give you financial support to help get out of debt and on the right track).
đź’µVITA tax program (at Burnside Senior Center, free tax preparation for all ages and incomes under $73,000).
đź’µVolunteers needed for the VITA program.

Thank you to yesterday's guest speaker, Georgia Gough, Goodwill Industries' VP of Workforce Development and Community Partnership for teaching us about these programs available to our community members.

If you know someone who could benefit from these programs (or who could volunteer to assist with the VITA program), please share this with them!

Along with sponsoring last month's event, we supplied volunteers to help bag up green beans and distribute the boxes.

🎉Congrats to our new board members, who were inducted last night!

Our special evening meeting was held at Hope Cafe, where we enjoyed a delicious spread made by Kim Winchell Hemker and her staff.

After dinner, Lt. Governor John Towers inducted our new officers, and secretary Janet Riley Ott passed out club awards including The Legion of Honor Award to Denny Brieske for 45 years of service, a plaque to outgoing president Shelley Hawver, and a gavel to incoming president Bill Trebilcock.

If you’re interested our club, we would love to have you join us as a guest to see what our club is all about. (Usually we meet on Mondays during lunch at Ponderosa. Reach out if you would like to come as our guest - lunch is on us!)

Thank you to Branch County United Way Executive Director Nate Cranson, who was our guest speaker yesterday.

We wish him well in his new role and can’t wait to see all the good we do together!

📚All of our guest speakers have a book in their name donated to an area elementary school. How apropos, since literacy is our signature project and we partner with United Way for Schools of Hope, United We Read and more!
