🚐 Our vehicles are aging, but the need for transportation isn't slowing down!

For people with disabilities and older adults in Mid-Missouri, reliable transportation means getting to medical appointments, grocery stores, and community activities.

At Services for Independent Living, our aging fleet is becoming increasingly expensive to maintain, and we need your help!

💙 Your donation can help cover repairs and support the purchase of newer, reliable vehicles.

Help us keep independence on the road! Support SIL's transportation program today.

Before the Americans with Disabilities Act, disabled activists were organizing sit-ins, occupying federal buildings, blocking buses, and demanding equal treatment under the law.

They weren't asking for sympathy. They were demanding their civil rights.

The Independent Living Movement grew out of that same determination: People with disabilities deserve the freedom to make their own choices, live in their communities, and participate fully in society.

That fight changed laws, public spaces, and expectations. And it isn't over.

At Services for Independent Living, we're proud to be part of a movement built by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities.

Because independence isn't a privilege. It's a right.

Who says mobility aids have to be boring? ✨

From vibrant colors and floral patterns to elegant designs and a little extra sparkle, canes can be just as unique as the people who use them!

Durable Medical Equipment (DME) serves an important purpose, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your personal style. A cane can provide stability and support while also being a fun way to express your personality.

At Services for Independent Living, we believe that independence, function, and individuality can go hand in hand.

Because mobility aids aren't just about getting around. They're about getting around YOUR way!

Need a cane or other durable medical equipment? SIL can help! Contact Services for Independent Living to learn more about our DME program, available equipment, and how we can help you find the support you need to stay independent.

You don’t have to give up control to get the care you need.

Consumer Directed Services helps people on Medicaid hire their own caregiver, so support fits your life instead of the other way around. You can choose someone you trust, like a friend, family member, or neighbor.

It can also help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and preparing meals. Caregivers are paid through the program, and there’s no cost to the participant.

Using a wheelchair doesn't keep me from living my life. It helps me fully participate.

My wheelchair allows me to explore new places and enjoy experiences that would otherwise be impossible.

I don’t use it because I’ve stopped being active.

I use it because I want to keep moving in ways that suit my body.

There’s no reason to feel ashamed of using mobility aids.

They're tools that can help us enjoy more of what life has to offer.

Image Description: A square graphic featuring a soft lavender background with a large, dusty rose-colored speech bubble in the center. Inside the speech bubble, large, bold white lettering reads, “Mobility aids can help you live your life.”
Delicate botanical illustrations decorate the upper-left and lower-right corners, featuring yellow flowers, dusty pink blossoms, peach-colored buds, and long green leaves. At the bottom of the graphic, beneath the speech bubble, the page name “Trish's Travels, Treats, and Treasures” appears in dark brown lettering.

Our volunteers help make a difference!

This year, volunteers from Columbia Atheists helped Services for Independent Living deliver Senior Sunshine Boxes to older adults in our community.

These special goodie bags were designed to bring a little joy, foster community connections, and help reduce social isolation among seniors.

Social isolation can have a significant impact on the health and well-being of older adults. Sometimes, a small gesture of kindness can remind someone that they are seen, valued, and connected to their community.

We're grateful to Columbia Atheists for donating their time and helping us spread a little sunshine! Volunteers like these make our community stronger.

I’ve seen how fast confusing systems can wear people down.

Advocacy matters. It turns noise into clear next steps, so people can ask the right questions and move forward with more confidence.

When lived experience is part of the conversation, the path gets clearer for everyone.

Not all durable medical equipment (DME) is created equal, and everyone deserves equipment that meets their needs, regardless of their size or weight.

These two quad canes may look similar, but they're designed to support different weight capacities. Using equipment that isn't rated for your weight can increase the risk of falls, injuries, and equipment failure.

At Services for Independent Living (SIL), we believe that safety, independence, and dignity belong to everyone, at every size.

Finding the right DME isn't just about what's available. It's about finding equipment that fits your body, supports your needs, and allows you to move safely and confidently.

Whether you need a cane, walker, wheelchair, or other mobility equipment, your weight should never be a barrier to being treated with dignity and respect.

Everybody deserves equipment that works for their body.
