Today our three firefighter one students participated in their live burn evolutions at Eastern Connecticut Fire School, along side instructors S. Lee and M. Lee. They will finish the rest of the semester learning about hazardous materials.

Now that you’ve changed your clocks, have you checked your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?

Ensure alarms are in date, most have a useful life of 10 years.

If they use batteries, do the batteries need to be changed?

Messaging around smoke alarms and batteries is more nuanced now that newer smoke alarms often feature 10-year batteries.

For those ending this weekend, change clocks and check batteries only if needed. Test smoke alarms monthly.

A friendly reminder that per CT State Statutes motorists are required to yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles with lights and sirens. When you see lights and hear sirens, the best practice is to pull over and stop, remain stopped until the vehicle passes, and maintain a safe distance.

Dayville and Attawaugan Fire Department spent the morning at Killingly Central School for fire prevention. We discussed the importance of having a meeting place outside during smoke detector activations, knowing your address in case of emergency, stop, drop, and roll, and what firefighters look like in their turnout gear and breathing apparatus.
