This year marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in hands-on learning at Tetonia Elementary School, with Farm to Classroom experiences that follow the seasons, even through the winter.
Our curriculum follows the natural rhythm of the growing year, with a new theme each month and weekly lessons designed for each grade level. Here’s a peek at what our students will be learning with their teachers and our non-profit partner, Mountain Roots Education.
Fall: Harvest & Discovery — Students will explore apples, squash, seeds, soil science, composting, farm history, and the animals and materials that help sustain a farm.
Winter: Growing Indoors — When the weather turns cold, learning continues in our heated greenhouse. Students will grow microgreens, start seeds, track temperatures, explore forest ecology, study fermentation, and discover how plants can be used in everyday life.
Spring: Planting & Pollinators — Students will investigate weeds and insects, learn about pollination, improve garden soil, plant potatoes, set up irrigation, and grow flowers in our spring cut-flower garden.
May: Sharing What We Grow — We’ll bring our learning together with a student-led Garden Stand, where students will explore the basics of selling what they grow, practice entrepreneurship, and welcome the community for garden tours.
This program is about so much more than gardening. Through hands-on lessons, students will build responsibility, practice teamwork, strengthen problem-solving skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for our local ecosystems and the food we eat.
We are thrilled to begin this new adventure in agriculture, science, and healthy living and watch our students grow in knowledge, confidence, and curiosity throughout the year!
