Simon Elliott, an organizer with the Twin Cities PSL, reminds us that instead of extinguishing the movement, the murder of Alex Pretti ignited a nationwide shut down on January 30th. Ultimately it was this united, organized, militant people power that defeated Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota and inspired the country to fight back.

We’re here at the Minnesota Socialism Summit, where hundreds of people from across the state and the country are gathering to learn from organizers on the frontlines of fighting back against the war machine, the deportation machine, the war on Black America, climate change and data centers, attacks on worker’s rights and everything else that is the product of capitalism.

The Trump administration is trying to roll back the clock on democratic rights - but we won’t let him! Socialism is on the rise - 62% of young people support socialism! Here people are giving definition to what socialism really means. There is no politician coming to save us - what will change everything is a people’s movement! The Minnesota Socialism Summit is about how we defeat Trump and the billionaire class and build a new system - a socialist system!

The way our society is structured impacts where we can go, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and how we live our everyday lives! Under capitalism, the planning of our communities, landscapes, and our built environment are used as a tool of white supremacy.

Infrastructure, such as highways, and polluting industries are weapons used against Black, Indigenous, and working class communities. Because of this, we have always fought back against the systems built to oppress us.

Black, Indigenous, and immigrant working class people bear the brunt of environmental neglect. Years of roadblocks have left our communities sick, underfunded, and car-reliant. A capitalist system isn’t meant to provide for anyone’s needs, but capital’s.

Under socialism we would have the power to decide how we build our society and how we steward our land. Minnesotans deserve better.

While hard working Minnesotans are struggling to afford rent, food, and supporting their families, the capitalist government spends $70 billion a year on ICE terror, $1.5 trillion a year on imperialist wars, and billions more on handouts to their billionaire friends.

But the people are ready for a change. Earlier this year, the people of the Twin Cities led the first general strike in nearly 80 years, and brought an end to Operation Metro Surge.
