🐢 FOUND A BOX TURTLE IN THE ROAD? HERE’S WHAT TO DO! 🐢

It’s common to see box turtles crossing roads, especially during warm or wet weather. If you spot one and it’s safe for you to stop, you can help — but there’s a right way to do it!

🚗 Make sure YOU are safe first. Never put yourself or other drivers in danger.

🐢 Move the turtle in the SAME direction it was already traveling. Place it safely off the roadway on that side. If you turn it around, it will often try to cross the road again.

🏡 Don’t relocate it somewhere else. Box turtles have small home ranges and strong homing instincts. Moving one miles away can cause it to become disoriented while trying to return home.

🙌 Pick it up gently with both hands, holding the sides of its shell. Keep your fingers away from its head and legs, and wash your hands afterward.

❌ Please don’t take it home as a pet. If it appears healthy, the best place for a wild box turtle is right where it lives.

🩹 If the turtle is injured, move it out of immediate traffic danger and contact Animal Control or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for guidance.

A couple of minutes of kindness can help a little turtle safely continue a journey that may have taken it many years to learn. 🐢💚

See a turtle. Slow down. Help it across. Let it stay wild.
