This afternoon, East Hampton Police responded to an attempted motor vehicle larceny on Maple Street.

Several unidentified people exited a black CRV and went through an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway. Fortunately, nothing was reported stolen.

This is a reminder to lock your vehicles and take any valuables with you — even during the daytime. It only takes a few seconds and can help prevent opportunistic crimes like this.

Thank you.

Press Release

On September 13, 2026, East Hampton officers received a report of a vehicle driving erratically as it entered the town from Portland. Officers located the vehicle as it traveled through town. It was observed passing multiple vehicles in no-passing zones, speeding, and creating a hazard for both pedestrians and other vehicles.

The vehicle continued through East Hampton and approached a road that had been closed by the East Hampton Fire Department due to an unrelated vehicle crash. The driver disregarded the road closure, striking one firefighter while narrowly missing several others.

The investigating officer, Officer Bankowski, was able to determine the identity of the driver through various resources, including license plate recognition (LPR) systems from outside agencies and free-text searches. Officer Bankowski coordinated with the Meriden Police Department and the Southington Police Department during the investigation. The suspect, Kendal Shelton was well-known to the Meriden Police Department with 28 previous arrest convictions.

On October 6, 2026, the suspect, Kendal Shelton (DOB: 10/21/93), was taken into custody on an arrest warrant that charged him with the following offenses:

- CGS 14-283b(b(1)): Failure to Move Over for Emergency Vehicles
- CGS 29-17: Failure to Comply with Fingerprinting
Shelton was unable to post the $30,000 court set bond set by the court and was transported to Middlesex Court for his appearance.
