Thank you to all our volunteers, artisans, and visitors for making Christmas and Crafts at the Tabor House a huge success. Our visitors enjoyed seeing and purchasing Cherokee crafts, and seeing demonstrations of early settler crafts like spinning yarn, sewing with a pedal sewing machine, and "Leather Bean" food preservation. The children were excited to be able to make and take home crafts. We also had the privilege of being able to display two J. D. Nelson rifles made around 1870. A SPECIAL thank you to Santa and Mrs. Clause for topping off a great time for the children.

John Daniel Nelson was a local clock maker, blacksmith, gunsmith, Civil War Surgeon, marble quarry businessman, and farmer. Nelson Georgia was named for him.

As a gunsmith, he made Half Stock, Percussion Long Rifles with an octagon shaped barrel. One of his rifles is on display at the Atlanta History Center.

Tim Nelson, a great grandson of John, will bring two JD Nelson rifles to display at the Christmas and Crafts event at the Tabor House History Museum. Both rifles are 62 inch long muzzleloaders.

Come and see these unique guns that were made by a gunsmith from Gilmer County.

It was a privilege to honor Gladys Spivey by planting a tree at the Tabor House Museum in her honor. She will be greatly missed. Below is the Times Courier newspaper article covering the tree dedication ceremony.
