Meet the Wood Thrush. A priority 1 species of greatest conservation need in Maine.

If you have lived in the woods of Maine you may recognize these little guys, if not by sight, then maybe by sound.

Their ethereal, almost flute-like song is the first thing you hear in your woods every morning and the last thing you hear before bed during the spring and fall.

If you want to spot a Wood Thrush within your forest, look for mature deciduous and mixed forests with a closed canopy, shrubs and saplings, a healthy layer of leaf litter, and wetter soil conditions.

For woodland owners, maintaining these forest characteristics can help provide the habitat Wood Thrush need to thrive.

Beech Leaf Disease first made its way into Maine in 2021. Check your tree canopy for signs of the disease, such as dark bands around leaf veins, curled and deformed leaves, and premature leaf drop.
