We’ve received complaints about kids and teens riding minibikes and e-bikes through yards that 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦. Some have caused damage or been disrespectful when asked to leave.

Someone else’s yard is not a riding trail. Private property requires permission.

Your typical off-road minibike is NOT legal on city streets or sidewalks. And just because it’s electric doesn’t make it an e-bike — or street legal.
Some are electric motorcycles/off-road vehicles and may require licensing and registration.
Iowa Code §§ 321.18, 321.20 & 321.174
🚲 𝐏𝐄𝐃𝐀𝐋𝐒 ≠ 𝐄-𝐁𝐈𝐊𝐄
Putting pedals on an electric motorcycle or minibike doesn’t magically make it an e-bike.
A legal Iowa e-bike must have operable pedals, a seat, two or three wheels, a motor of 750 watts or less AND meet Class 1, 2 or 3 requirements.
You must be 16+ to operate a Class 3 e-bike.
Iowa Code §§ 321.1(36A) & 321.235B(6)

Something advertised as an “e-bike” may not legally qualify. Check the wattage, assisted speed and classification.
📍 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐘 𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐄?
Legal e-bikes can generally go anywhere bicycles are allowed.
Iowa Code § 321.235B(9)
In Sioux City, bicycles/e-bikes cannot be ridden on sidewalks in business zones, school zones or on bridge sidewalks/approaches. Pedestrians have the right-of-way where sidewalk riding is allowed.
SC Municipal Code § 10.52.050
Electric ≠ e-bike. Pedals ≠ e-bike. Electric ≠ automatically street legal.
