NATIONAL FIRST RESPONDERS DAY 🚨

Today, the Evansville Fire Department recognizes the men and women serving our community in fire, EMS, law enforcement, and emergency communications.

Public safety depends on teamwork and collaboration. We are grateful for our partner agencies and the dedication of those who respond in the field and those who coordinate emergency responses behind the scenes.

Thank you to every first responder for their continued commitment to our community.

DID YOU KNOW? 🚨

A new fire engine doesn’t simply show up ready to serve our community. It takes years of planning, countless decisions, and people working behind the scenes to get it right.

Recently, members of the Evansville Fire Department’s Apparatus Committee and assigned crew members spent two long days at Pierce Manufacturing conducting final inspections on our new Engine 1 and Engine 15.

This purchase was made three years ago, and we want to thank the Apparatus Committee and crew members who have dedicated their time and effort throughout this process. Their attention to detail helps ensure these engines meet EFD standards and provide our firefighters with the equipment they need to safely serve our community.

The new engines are expected to arrive in Evansville within the next couple of weeks. From there, crews will install equipment and complete training before the engines are expected to enter service in early to mid-December.

Our crews respond to calls like this every day, and most of the time, the community never hears about what happens after we leave. But every once in a while, a family shares an experience that reminds us just how much those moments can mean. With their permission, we wanted to share this one.

Earlier this month, EFD personnel, including Engine 4, C-Shift, and EFD EMS, responded to a call involving a 2-month-old baby who had stopped breathing. Thankfully, he was breathing when our crews arrived. His parents had just been through something no parent ever wants to experience, and while our crews cared for their little boy, they also took the time to reassure and support his family.
His mom reached out to us recently to say thank you. Here’s part of what she shared:

“They didn’t have to support us the way they did, with the immediate praise and reassurance, but it truly helped us more than anything that night. They will always be a part of his story.”

The family is still looking for answers, but we're thankful to hear their little boy is doing okay, all things considered. His parents wanted to bring snacks and a thank-you card to the crew at Station 4. That gesture, along with the kind words they shared with us, is a pretty special reminder that people remember how you treat them, especially during a difficult moment.

And to this little boy and his family, we're rooting for you.

This morning, EFD joined the last Block-by-Block event of the year in the Star neighborhood.

From helping clean up the neighborhood to promoting smoke detector awareness and installation opportunities, we’re proud to be out in the community working alongside all the volunteers who came out to help keep Evansville safe and clean.

DID YOU KNOW? 🔥

When you hear “IT Manager,” you probably think computers and troubleshooting. But at EFD, the job is a whole lot more than that.

Since joining EFD in March 2016, Derek Rollins has gone from working in the station as a firefighter and lieutenant to keeping our department connected behind the scenes. His experience on the trucks gives him a unique perspective on the technology our crews depend on every day. Before moving to this position, Derek served as the lieutenant on Engine 1, C-shift, and played a role in many of our special teams.

Today, his responsibilities reach nearly every corner of the department. He manages everything from radios and iPads to CAD systems, EMS monitors and even the programming behind our ambulance lights. He works closely with dispatch to keep systems running smoothly, troubleshoots problems in the field and helps ensure our crews and dispatchers can communicate effectively.

Why does all of that matter?
Because communication isn't just convenient in our line of work. It's a matter of life safety. From knowing when a crew is responding or arrives on scene to ensuring firefighters can communicate over their radios, the technology Derek maintains helps keep our people connected and our emergency response running efficiently.

Here's another interesting fact: Derek didn't go to school for IT or networking. He's built his knowledge over the years through hands on experience and a willingness to learn and figure things out. When a problem comes up, he finds a solution. That same mindset carries beyond technology. Whether he's helping coordinate resources during a major incident or troubleshooting equipment at an emergency scene, Derek believes that if he has the skills to help, he should.

Favorite part of the job?
Getting to connect with members across the department and having the opportunity to help move EFD forward.
Does he miss station life, making runs and hanging out with his crew? Absolutely. But he says this role is fulfilling in a different way, giving him the opportunity to make a difference across the entire department.

The role goes well beyond IT. His work helps keep our crews connected, our equipment functioning and the department running smoothly. Thanks, Derek, for all you do behind the scenes for EFD!

It’s WPE time at EFD!

Every year, every Evansville firefighter, from our newest recruit to the Fire Chief, puts their skills and physical readiness to the test through the Work Performance Evaluation (WPE).

Wearing full turnout gear and SCBA, firefighters must complete a series of job-related tasks in 10 minutes and 3 seconds or less. The test includes everything from climbing stairs with a hose pack and forcing entry to advancing hose lines, maze search, and completing a victim drag.

It’s not just about beating the clock. It’s about making sure our firefighters can handle the physical demands of the job when they’re called.
