🚨Attention Camden County Voters🚨

A question about Camden County’s funding for water quality, open space, and recreation is on your November 3 ballot. The question asks voters to consider increasing the County's Open Space Tax and Water Quality Tax from 2 cents to 3 cents per $100 of assessed real property value. The additional cent would cost the average Camden County homeowner $1.83 per month.

Revenue generated by this measure would help fund the Camden County Open Space, Recreation, Farmland, And Historic Preservation Trust Fund, which was approved by voters in 1998 to preserve parks, natural areas, historic sites and farmland.

If approved by voters, this measure will:

✅ Improve the water quality of rivers, lakes and streams including the Cooper River

✅ Protect drinking water sources

✅ Protect natural areas from development

✅ Restore natural areas including wetlands that help prevent flooding

✅ Provide clean, accessible parks

The kayak launch at Gateway Park in Camden is officially complete and open to the public! 🎉

We joined partners in Camden today to celebrate this new opportunity for residents and visitors to connect with the city's green spaces and waterways. The project features:

🟢 A new ADA-compliant dock and floating platform to access kayaks and canoes

🟢 New walking paths, an elevated boardwalk, and interpretive signs

🟢 Picnic areas and a pollinator garden 🦋

"NJ Conservation is thrilled to have worked on this project to enhance Gateway Park in collaboration with Camden County and our incredible partners," said our Executive Director Alison Mitchell. "Thanks to generous funding support from the William Penn Foundation and Silent Maid 1924, this kayak launch offers a safe access point to the Cooper River and more opportunities for the Camden community to connect with nature. We look forward to supporting community programs that will make use of this great new access point in the years ahead."

Jeepers creepers 👀

This spooky season, if you’ve felt like you were being watched on a hike, it might’ve just been some doll’s eyes peeping—ahem, growing—nearby. Doll’s eyes, also known as white baneberry, is a native woodland perennial in the buttercup family. Its striking white berries with a distinct black dot in the center resemble porcelain doll eyes, giving the plant its name.

We're all for creating a climate-ready Liberty State Park! 🗽

We hope advocates attending the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's (NJDEP) open house this Saturday, Oct. 17 will voice their support for a climate resilience strategy for the park that DOES NOT include developing an enormous boat storage warehouse along the park's northern entrance or the private commercial use of public parkland.

NJDEP recently proposed a 60-year lease agreement with Suntex Marinas to operate Liberty Landing Marina within Liberty State Park. This agreement would include the warehouse and violate limits on the park's use.

Like other places across the state, Liberty State Park is subject to the worsening impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels. We must ensure the state's available resources are used to protect the park for public enjoyment, not to create a boating facility that caters to yacht owners at the public's expense.

We couldn't be happier to be partnering with Prallsville Mills to host the 32nd Annual Donald & Beverley Jones Memorial Hike on Sunday, Nov. 8 in Stockton! Join us as we celebrate the lives of our friends, Donald and Beverley, and their legacy in conservation. 🌳

The family-friendly event will feature a series of free guided hikes departing from Prallsville Mills. This year's hikes will highlight the incredible scenery of Wickecheoke Creek and the preserved lands surrounding it. Refreshments and lunch will be provided! 🍻🍕

Sign up for one of the two hikes at njconservation.org/events

To get the trails ready for the hikes, we're hosting a "cleanup day" with Delaware Township this Saturday, Oct. 17 from 9 a.m.-noon. We'll meet at the Delaware Township Municipal Building in Sergeantsville and carpool to the trails. All are welcome! 🪏
