This year marks 50 years of the national Weatherization Assistance Program. Since 1976, it has helped families make their homes safer, more comfortable, and more energy-efficient—while lowering energy costs.

Nationally the program has:
• Helped more than 7.2 million families
• Improved about 32,000 homes each year with U.S. Department of Energy funding
• Helped households save an average of $372 or more per yearSupported about 8,500 jobs nationwide

Here in Fort Worth, our 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 (𝗪𝗔𝗣) has enhanced energy efficiency for hundreds of residents throughout the years, lowering consumption, energy costs and more.

Especially during the Texas heat, the program has helped families with HVAC repair. Find out more at https://www.fortworthtexas.gov/departments/neighborhoods/weatherization

Wedgwood East is the latest Fort Worth neighborhood selected for the City’s Neighborhood Improvement Program (NIP), an annual initiative that directs millions of dollars toward improving neighborhood infrastructure, safety and quality of life.

The program uses community data and neighborhood input to identify areas where targeted investments can make a meaningful difference for residents. Previous NIP neighborhoods include Como, Seminary, Historic Marine and Fairhaven, with New Mitchell selected last year.

Wedgwood East, now the 12th neighborhood to be a part of the program, is located in southwest Fort Worth and is known for its mature trees, established homes and strong sense of community.

“Our roads are having problems,” said Frank Sloan, a longtime Wedgewood East resident who has ties to the neighborhood dating back to 1980.

Sloan leads FLOW, short for “For the Love of Wedgwood,” a local community group.

Wedgwood East features nearly 1,300 homes and was developed primarily between the late 1950s and the 1980s. As of the latest American Community Survey, Wedgwood East had a median household income of $65,625 and poverty rate of 18%.

Potential improvement projects could include street repairs, additional streetlighting and park enhancements. The final priorities will depend on community feedback and the needs identified through the program.

Community members will have opportunities to weigh in as the City begins gathering input on how NIP funding should be spent.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Wedgwood East community members to help strengthen the neighborhood and enhance quality of life through a One City, One Team approach,” said Program Manager Jesus Murillo. “The Neighborhood Improvement Program is an exciting opportunity to work together to address neighborhood priorities and invest in the community’s future. By listening to community members, working across City departments and making thoughtful use of available resources, we look forward to building strong partnerships and supporting meaningful, lasting improvements in Wedgwood East.”

Neighborhood Services will announce upcoming community events where Wedgwood East residents can share their concerns, suggest projects and help shape the neighborhood’s future.
