You say it's sweater weather. They say it's turtleneck time!

As the Park season winds down, so does the active season for Maine's turtles who are now settling in for their winter slumber. Turtles look pretty cozy when they tuck inside their shell, but their turtleneck isn't actually designed for warmth. Their long retractable necks reach out to hunt, forage, and defend themselves, and bend into an "S" to tuck into their shell for protection.

Without the ability to produce their own body heat, Maine turtles hide away from winter underwater, sheltered by banks and roots, or buried in mud until spring returns. The turtles at the Park have moved from their pondside exhibit to their sheltered seasonal home in the visitor center. Be sure to stop in and see them one more time before they too tuck away until spring!

Spooky season icon or superhero status?

Black vultures are frequently associated with death. From their dark look to their haunting flight, and a diet of dead animals, they seem like the perfect icon for the spooky season. But their eerie lifestyle is a wild superhero in disguise.

By scavenging on nature's leftovers, they not only keep the forest floor clean, but also reduce the spread of disease, and help cycle nutrients in the environment. They are one of the most important members of Maine's wild cleanup crew, and there's nothing spooky about that!

It takes a lot of energy to grow a set of impressive antlers, but deer face even more energy demands in fall after antler growth is complete.

White-tailed deer tackle both the rut (breeding season) and preparation for winter during Maine's few months of fall. They shift their diet with the seasons, always selecting the most nutritious plants they can find.

Throughout fall, female deer build up fat reserves under their skin, in their abdomen, between muscles, and even in their leg bones not just to survive winter, but to support pregnancy.

Meanwhile, bucks reach their peak weight earlier in the season then completely shift focus to the rut, expend an enormous amount of energy finding and competing for mates, and often lose weight heading into winter.

Meeting the challenges of changing seasons takes adaptability and resilience, and that's what Maine wildlife is made of.

Phenology is nature's calendar - the natural timing and cycle of wild events driven by seasonal changes.

Fall is an active time in Maine's woods and waters. Fish are spawning, and deer are sparring. Birds are migrating and bears are packing on the pounds. Turtles are finding winter homes, and young coyotes and foxes are dispersing. Porcupines and turkeys are taking advantage of autumn eats, and so much more!

Tuning in to the annual rhythm of the outdoors provides clues of where and when to look when watching for wildlife. If you visited the Park over the summer, now is a great time to come back and see how the animals have changed. Take notes, then use what you learn to discover wildlife in the wild.

It's spooky season, but this is no ghost!

Opossums usually have a salt and pepper look with a lighter face, pink nose, dark eyes, pink toes, and a nearly hairless tail. This albino opossum has different look but is an opossum through and through in every other way.

With a nocturnal lifestyle, and a mouthful of 50 teeth, and spot-on impressions of death (playing 'possum), opossums may seem like a good symbol for the spooky season, but the more you learn about them, the less intimidating they seem.

⭐️Opossums create star-like tracks with the wide-spread toes on their front feet.
😮Playing dead isn't an intentional ruse, it's an involuntary response to fear.
🩶Rabies is rare in opossums thanks to their unusually low body temperature.
🌳As omnivorous scavengers, opossums help habitat health.
👖Anything with pockets is awesome, and as marsupials, female opossums have one built in.
