Congratulations to Jamie Segroves and Casey Hammack on receiving the Gary Fortenbery Leadership Award! Jamie and Casey were presented this honor at the 2026 Partners in Conservation Awards Luncheon, hosted by the Alabama Forestry Foundation in partnership with the Alabama Forestry Commission, Alabama Farmers Federation, and Alabama Wildlife Federation.🌳💚

This award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond to support the Alabama Tree Farm Association (ATFA), strengthen local Alabama Forestry Planning Committees, and encourage landowner involvement in forestry education and outreach.

We’re proud to see Jamie and Casey recognized for their dedication to building strong partnerships, supporting landowners, and strengthening Alabama’s forestry community. Their work helps create opportunities for landowners to learn, connect, and take an active role in the future of forestry across our state.

Join us in congratulating Jamie and Casey on this well-deserved recognition!

🌳 Congratulations to Matt Hannah of Hannah's Tree Farm in Winston County, recipient of the 2026 Helene Mosley Memorial Award for his commitment to responsible forest management, wildlife conservation and natural resource education.

Since purchasing his 50-acre property in 2020, Matt has implemented a variety of management practices, including timber thinning, prescribed burning and silvopasture, to support healthy forests and wildlife habitat while creating a diverse, multi-use property.

His dedication to education is just as noteworthy. Hannahs Tree Farm has hosted three Alabama Forestry Awareness Week (FAWN) programs, introducing hundreds of sixth-grade students to Alabama’s natural resources, as well as a Learn and Burn event in partnership with the Alabama Forestry Commission and Alabama Forestry Association.

The Helene Mosley Memorial Award recognizes Alabama landowners who demonstrate outstanding stewardship and exemplary forest management, with an emphasis on education. Matt’s efforts reflect the value of managing land responsibly and sharing that knowledge to benefit others.

Congratulations to Matt on this well-deserved recognition! 💚

As all of you probably know by now, Earl Norton passed away Saturday morning.  He worked every day to promote and improve the land. He loved that forest and always wanted to show it to his friends and others. As with everything Earl did, his forest was a showcase of proper forest management.

As conservationists, we should strive to “be like Earl”.  He often thought about the old Soil Conservation Service acronym SWAPA:

Always try to save SOIL.  Keep it from eroding and make it healthy.
Keep our WATER Clean and Clear.
Do things which help to keep the AIR we breathe healthy. Go plant a tree.
Utilize the proper PLANTS in their proper environment. Use natives and not invasives.
Protect all our ANIMALS and provide them with the habitat they need.

Harvest is in motion across Alabama!💚

As combines roll through fields and crops make their way from farm to market, Alabama drivers should expect to share rural roadways with farmers and ag equipment this fall. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, stay alert and practice patience when meeting tractors or combines on the road.

Safety tips ⬇️
• Slow down when approaching farm equipment.
• Watch for slow-moving vehicle signs. Orange triangles identify vehicles traveling less than 25 mph.
• Look for electronic or hand turn signals.
• Pass farm equipment cautiously.
• Keep all tires on the road, and expect equipment operators to do the same.
• Watch for flashing amber lights.

Always remember agricultural vehicle operators have a right to the road.🚜
