🚨 TODAY IS NATIONAL FIRST RESPONDERS DAY! 🚒🚓🚑

When an emergency strikes, there are extraordinary people in Gunnison County who answer the call — day or night, in sunshine, snowstorms, floods and everything in between.

Today, October 28, we recognize and thank ALL of the dedicated first responders who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

❤️ To our Gunnison County Sheriff's Office deputies as well as our Town and City police officers, who protect and serve our residents and visitors;

❤️ To our firefighters, EMTs, and GVH staff, who save lives and protect property when everything is on the line;

❤️ To our Search & Rescue and air medical crews, many of whom volunteer their time to respond in dangerous circumstances;

❤️ To our 911 dispatchers, who are the calm, reassuring voices on the other end of the line when every second counts;

❤️ To our Emergency Management team, who work behind the scenes to prepare for emergencies and coordinate resources and response efforts;

❤️ And to our Public Works crews (yes, they are first responders, too!), who clear mudslides, plow roads so emergency vehicles can get through, set up roadblocks, and more...

We thank you all! In a mountain community like ours, emergency response takes teamwork, dedication and a willingness to show up when others need help most.

To every first responder serving Gunnison County: THANK YOU. Your courage, compassion and commitment to our community do not go unnoticed. We're grateful for you today and every day!

🍂🏔️ ONLY TWO MORE WEEKENDS TO ENJOY COTTONWOOD PASS!

If you've been looking for an excuse to take one more scenic drive over Cottonwood Pass before winter settles in, this weekend and next are your last chance!

🚧 Cottonwood Pass will officially close for the winter season at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 2.

Gunnison County makes this annual closure decision in coordination with our partners in Chaffee County, which maintains the other side of the pass.

Each year, we strive to keep Cottonwood Pass open through the third hunting season. But as temperatures drop and daylight hours grow shorter, maintaining safe travel conditions becomes increasingly challenging and costly. At a certain point, keeping the road open is simply no longer a fiscally responsible use of taxpayer dollars for either county.

We appreciate everyone's understanding as we balance accessibility, public safety, and responsible stewardship of county resources.

So grab your camera, enjoy those breathtaking mountain views, and take one last trip over the pass before we say goodbye until spring! ❄️

Please remember: Mountain weather can change quickly, so check conditions before heading out and drive safely. ✅
