Town meeting is 4 1/2 months away, but budget season has begun in our schools! This year, the Mountain View Union and Hazen Union School Boards are conducting a joint budget listening session early in the process - a time to hear from our community and begin a conversation about the big ticket items that make school budgeting so difficult.

On September 25, the Hazen Union Dare To Be Me class participated in a black ash splint pounding workshop at Atkins Field. Joanne Garton, with the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation joined Abenaki educators and basket makers Kerry Wood and Aaron Wood to guide students through this hands-on experience. The students learned about the threat posed by the emerald ash borer in our state and the deep historical and cultural importance of black ash to Indigenous communities. They then proceeded to use time-honored techniques to pound the wood of a black ash harvested from local woods to loosen its growth rings and peel away long, flexible strips, or splints, of wood to be used in basket making. It was a great day to connect with Indigenous knowledge, engage in traditional craftsmanship, and build a greater appreciation for our natural resources.

On October 22nd, students and professors from the Dartmouth College anthropology course 'Rural People and Rural Places' visited Craftsbury. They began with a visit to the Jones Family Farm, where they learned about economic opportunities in the NEK. As a diversified farm, with both dairy and logging operations, they were able to get a glimpse into this thriving family-owned operation.

Their second stop was focused on learning more about public education in a thriving, rural school. They came together first with some high school students and then later a group of middle school students joined. The questions and conversations were rich and students learned from each other. The Dartmouth students expressed being impressed with how well teachers and staff knew individual students, the number of academic and extra-curricular opportunities in such a small school, and with how connected our school is to our community partners. It was a great morning of learning together. We are already planning for more collaboration in the future for Craftsbury and Dartmouth students to learn from each other!
